NBN Co's speed upgrades for NBN 100 plans have started rolling out, making the fastest NBN plans even faster. Not everyone is eligible for these new, faster speeds, but here's what you need to know.

What NBN plans are getting upgraded?

NBN 100 plans have been upgraded to maximum download speeds of 500Mbps, and NBN 250 plans to 750Mbps. Both NBN 500 and NBN 750 plans will have maximum upload speeds of 50Mbps. NBN 1000 plans are still limited to 1,000Mbps, but upload speeds have doubled to 100Mbps.

A faster NBN 2000 speed tier is now also available via select providers, promising download speeds of up to 2,000Mbps. HFC customers will get upload speeds of 100Mbps on NBN 2000 plans, which will double to 200Mbps for FTTP customers.

Who is eligible for faster NBN plans?

The new upgraded NBN faster NBN plans are only available to customers on FTTP and HFC connections. If that's not you, you still may be able to upgrade to FTTP.

By the end of 2025, over five million FTTN and FTTC addresses will be able to upgrade to FTTP for free. Rather than upgrading all customers automatically, NBN Co delivers the upgrade on request once the technology is live in a given area.

If you're already eligible for an upgrade, all you need to do to trigger the upgrade is order an NBN 500 plan or faster.

Upgrading to FTTP will allow FTTN and FTTC customers to take advantage of the new speed tiers. Read more about the process of requesting a free FTTP upgrade here.

When will the faster NBN speeds be available?

NBN Co made the new speed tiers available to providers from September 14. So far, we've seen providers including Aussie Broadband, Optus, Tangerine, More, TPG, Superloop, iiNet, Southern Phone, Leaptel, Launtel, Swoop, and AGL selling NBN 500 plans for new customers. Some of these providers also have NBN 750 and NBN 2000 plans, but not all of them.

Eligible customers with these telcos may already see faster speeds, or in some cases, they may need to give their NTD a restart.

In other cases, NBN providers may be rolling things out a little slower. For example, some iiNet customers have reported that the change will take as long as a week to arrive. Dodo and iPrimus won't be passing on the changes to their customers until October 1.

In addition, customers on NBN 100/40 plans may to manually request a new plan from their NBN provider.

Will faster NBN plans cost more?

NBN Co isn't charging NBN providers more for the new faster plans. Wholesale costs will stay the same for NBN 100, NBN 250, and NBN 1000 plans. As such, an NBN 500 plan should cost the same as NBN 100 plan, and an NBN 750 plan should cost the same as what an NBN 250 plan used to.

In most cases so far, providers have been providing the speed upgrade to their existing customers free of charge. This includes Telstra, Optus, Superloop, Aussie Broadband, Tangerine, More, Vodafone, Dodo, and iPrimus.

Here's current pricing for NBN 100 plans and up:

Will I need new hardware for faster NBN plans?

If you haven't upgraded your modem or router for a while, there's a chance you may new networking hardware to support faster internet plans. WiFi 5 can be fast enough for 1Gbps speeds, but if you're buying a new device, you'll want WiFi 6 as a minimum. Customers who want an NBN 2000 plan will likely need a WiFi 7 modem.

If you're still using a WiFi 4 modem (also known as WiFi 802.11n), you'll definitely want to upgrade.

If you're considering an NBN 2000 plan, NBN Co may need to organise a new NTD for you. This should be free in most cases, but could attract a charge as high as $300 if you want a specific modem, such as the four-port option available for FTTP customers.
