Apple rounds out its stable of entertainment services with its own streaming platform: Apple TV.

Apple TV is an all-original video subscription service, where every show and movie is genuinely an Apple exclusive - you won't find these hits on any other service.

It launched in Australia in November 2019 and has continued to debut new Apple TV original shows and films each month. Its content tends to include work from some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lawrence, Will Ferrell, and Octavia Spencer just to name a few.

How much does Apple TV cost in Australia?

Apple TV costs $15.99 per month in Australia, with a seven-day free trial available for new subscribers.

An Apple TV subscription will cover an entire family - up to six people. However, the five other members must be part of your Family Sharing group; Apple TV isn't like Netflix where you can just pass around a password.

Apple TV only has one subscription tier. You can change between 480p and up to 4K streaming, and access offline downloads out of the box.

What can I watch on Apple TV in Australia?

Three rows of TV shows in the Apple TV plus catalogue

Apple TV launched with just eight original series and one original documentary but has since continued to add to this library. Every month a new Apple Original show becomes available including work from the writers of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Bob's Burgers.

The main difference between Apple TV and other streaming services is that Apple is focusing solely on original content.

Some of the most popular shows available on Apple TV include Severance, For All Mankind, Ted Lasso, Morning Wars, Shrinking, Master of the Air, and Mythic Quest. There are original films too including Greyhound, Killers of the Flower Moon, and the 2021 Best Picture winner Coda.

How can I watch Apple TV in Australia?

To watch Apple TV you'll need to be connected to the internet. Apple offers its own streaming device: the Apple TV 4K set-top box. This Apple TV box is available from $219, Siri Remote included.

If you're not in a hurry to purchase the Apple TV 4K then don't stress, you have plenty of options. Apple TV is also available through Chromecast with Google TV, PlayStation, Xbox, Google TV, select 2018, 2019 and newer Samsung smart TVs, some Panasonic, Vizio and HiSense TVs, and on Amazon Fire TV, LG, Xfinity, Roku, and Sony platforms.

If you're on the go Apple TV is also viewable through the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, and Mac. In addition, you can watch Apple TV in browsers including Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.

If location services are set up family members can help locate the group's missing devices. It includes built-in parental controls for families with children too.

Apple Family Sharing even works with friends. You'll need to be in the same country but there's no restriction on living at the same address. The one catch is that app purchases get billed to the family organiser. If that's you, make sure you have a conversation with your friends on how you'll be compensated before you set it up.

Note: You can only belong to one family group at a time and any purchases travel with the member so if someone leaves you may lose access to some purchased content.

Does Apple TV have a free trial in Australia?

Yes, Apple TV currently offers a seven-day free trial for new subscribers. Better still you can unlock a three-month free trial when you buy an eligible device from Apple.

Eligible devices may vary from time to time but include new iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, or Mac products. You'll find the free trial unlocked in the Apple TV app when you're logged in with the same Apple ID associated with your device purchase.

Note: If you have Apple Family Sharing you may not be able to access subsequent offers for new devices on the same account.

What are the best internet plans for Apple TV?

Most internet plans these days come with unlimited data so that's not really a concern. What do you do want to consider is capacity. Internet plans have a maximum download speed and you share that capacity amongst your household.

If you're a household of between two and four people we would recommend at least an NBN 50 plan. That gets you enough bandwidth for a couple of people to be streaming in different rooms or use the internet for other activities.

Here are the cheapest NBN 50 plans in WhistleOut's database:

What are the alternatives to Apple TV ?

While Apple TV has a lot going for it, it might not have the titles you're interested in. That's okay because there are many more streaming services Australians can sign up for including:

Plus there are streaming options to catch up on free-to-air TV such as ABC (iView), Ten (Tenplay), Seven (7Plus), Nine (9Now), and SBS (On Demand).

Netflix is one of Apple's biggest competitors in Australia when it comes to original content. Netflix is home to recent hits like Wednesday, Bridgerton, Beef, The Three Body Problem, Heartbreak High and more.

Local streaming service Stan offers a variety of content, including originals Bump and Ten Pound Poms that have a distinctly Australian feel. It's home to popular international hits too like RuPaul's Drag Race, The Office, Yellowstone, and Breaking Bad to name a few.

If you're after big-budget drama on par with Apple TV's offering then you'll want Binge. It's the home of HBO in Australia and is where you'll find House of the Dragon, Euphoria, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us without a Foxtel package.

Amazon Prime Video is another worthy competitor when it comes to original content you won't find anywhere. You can catch The Boys, Daisy Jones and the Six, The Rings of Power, and The Wheel of Time.

For a deeper dive into the differences between each see our streaming service comparison guide.

Can I stream Apple TV on multiple devices at the same time?
