Best Streaming Service | Netflix | $7.99 per month |
Runner Up | Disney Plus | $15.99 per month |
Runner Up | Apple TV Plus | $12.99 per month |
With new content gracing our screens each month across different platforms, it's tricky to keep on top of who's offering what.
Each month our editorial team sifts through the new release lists and continuing series to decide which streaming services we think are the best of the best for the month.
How we chose the best streaming services
We judge the best streaming service and two runner ups on a monthly basis depending on the new and continuing TV series, and films we’re excited to watch.
Each month, the members of the extended WhistleOut editorial team (WhistleOut Australia, WhistleOut Singapore, and Reviews.org/au) vote for up to five shows or movies coming to major streaming services (Apple TV Plus, Binge, Disney Plus, Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Prime Video, and Stan).
These votes are then used to pick the best streaming service and runners up. This guide ranks streaming services solely on content, rather than considering factors like pricing, features, or technical specifications.
Best streaming service: Netflix
This month we've selected Netflix for the best streaming service due to its return of two very prominent TV series and the rise of another.
Here are some of the standout shows we think make Netflix worth subscribing to this month:
Black Mirror - Season 7 premiere
It's dark, it's confronting, it's reality at its (potentially) worst. Black Mirror serves up a brand new season all at once on April 10, with an incredible cast and a special treat for longtime fans - the return of the Bandersnatch storyline plus a sequel to season four's premiere episode, USS Callister.
To save you the trouble of needing to Google all the familiar faces while you watch, here are just some of the exciting casting choices for this season: Chris O'Dowd (The IT Crowd), Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation, The Social Network), Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Emma Corrin (Deadpool & Wolverine, Nosferatu), Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) and Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man, Billions) plus the return of Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother) and Will Poulter (The Maze Runner series).
You - Season 5 premiere
Hello you. Yes You. It's back and very excited to be in your living room. Ok enough of the creepy dialogue. Penn Badley (Gossip Girl) reprises his role as the uber cringey Joe Goldberg as he returns to his homesoil in the US and to our screens to deliver a killer final season. With socialite love interest from last season, Kate, alive and breathing by his side, Joe attempts to resume a normal life. But in the public eye will it be all that easy?
Binge all 10 episodes at once only on Netflix from April 24.
Moonrise - New series premiere
A new sci-fi anime from Netflix, Moonrise (adapted from the novel Tenchi Meisatu by Tou Ubukata) tells the story of Jack, a scout caught up in cosmic conflict between Earth and the Moon.
After rebels from the Moon kill Jack's family in a terrorist bombing, he becomes a scout for the Earth army fighting on the Moon. There who should he discover but his childhood friend Phil on the side of the enemy.

Andor - Season 2 premiere
There are 3 certainties in life - death, taxes and The Star Wars franchise will never run out of content. Join Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as he reprises his Rogue One role to tell the origin story of how he became a Rebel Hero.
Starring alongside him in this Emmy award nominated series, Alan Tudyk (Rogue One, The Electric State, Firefly), Stellan Skarsgård (Dune: Part 1 & 2, Thor, Good Will Hunting) and Genevieve O'Reilly (The Dry, Rogue One, Ashoka)
Andor launches its second and final season on April 22 with a generous three-episode premiere.
Doctor Who - Season 2 premiere

Sea Lions of the Galapagos - New series premiere
If all you know about the Galápagos Islands are the Galápagos finches or Darwin's finches, you're in need of an updated science lesson. Because the true Guardians of the Galápagos are in fact its sea lions.
For those fascinated with animal documentaries, this series treats viewers to an up-close and personal encounter with a sea lion pup, Leo. Audiences will marvel at how he interacts with the various creatures that inhabit the exotic island and the dangers life poses for a seal lion.
Sea Lions of the Galapagos, which is soothingly narrated by Academy Award Winner Brendan Fraser, airs exclusively on April 22.

Dylan Crismale, Digital Content Editor, WhistleOut
Other shows and movies to stream in March
Some of the best returning shows we can't wait to dive back into, plus a healthy dose of new releases we think are worth checking out:
The Last of Us - Max - Season 2 premiere
The award-winning hit dystopian series The Last of Us finally makes its return on the new streaming service Max.
Based on the second video game in the series, season 2 jumps us five years into the future from where season 1 left off, Joel (Pedro Pascal, Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian) and Ellie's (Bella Ramsey, Game of Thrones) relationship is strained after Joel lied to her.
After a violent event disrupts their relative peace, Ellie must go on a journey to Seattle. She'll have to brave the zombie-like, fungus-infected monsters plaguing the world. The Last of Us streams from April 13.
G20 - Prime Video - Movie premiere
G20 is a Prime original film starring Viola Davis as President Danielle Sutton and Anthony Starr (The Boys) as yet another bad guy in charge of a group of rebels. Picture it - you're a wife, a mother and a US politician whose military skills are put to the test when terrorists invade the G20 Summit. Watch on as Davis fights to save as many people as she can, including her family, and take back control from a hostile takeover.
And while it sounds like the typical government vs terrorist organisation shooty shooty bang bang action thriller, sometimes it's just the kind of film to cosy up to on a lazy Sunday afternoon. G20 is available to stream from April 10.
Bravo's Love Hotel - Hayu - Series premiere
Bravo's Love Hotel is a brand new series uniting fan favourites from The Real Housewives franchise, including Shannon Storms Beador, Gizelle Bryant, Ashley Darby and Luann de Lesseps just to name a few. These ladies will be whisked off to the ultimate luxurious location in Mexico to compete against one another for the hearts of awaiting eligible bachelors.
Check in and unpack all the drama on Hayu from April 28.
Are you on the right internet plan for streaming TV?
Streaming is one of the most data-intensive things you can do online so it's important to consider what provider you're with and what plan is best for you. If you're not careful, Netflix, Stan, Foxtel Now or Prime Video can make a serious dent in your bandwidth. But if you pick the right plan, you can binge endlessly without having running into isssues.
Most services offer up to four quality settings for when you're streaming in your web browser, on your smart TV, or on your game console. These are as follows:
Stream quality | Data usage (per hour) | Data usage (per 30 hours) |
---|---|---|
Low | 0.57GB | 17.1GB |
Medium (SD) | 1.13GB | 33.9GB |
High (HD) | 2.89GB | 86.7GB |
Ultra (4K / UHD) | 7GB | 210GB |
If you're streaming on high, streaming a single feature-length film on Stan, Netflix, Foxtel Now or Amazon will use somewhere around 6GB. Most NBN plans are unlimited now, but you'll still want enough speed to ensure you're not buffering. NBN 50 plans are a great middle-ground option and are still quite affordable and widely available on all NBN connection types.
Below we have broken down the most affordable plans on each speed tier for comparison:
If you just need a basic connection, it could be worth considering an NBN 25 plan. You can expect download speeds of up to 25Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5Mbps. Most online activities can still be done on an NBN 25 plan, but it will start to buckle if you have too many people using your connection.
NBN 50 plans are your best bang for your buck option when it comes to the NBN. They are affordable and are a good option for households with between two and four people. An NBN 50 plan will ensure everyone in your household is able to partake in their favourite online activities, whether it's streaming movies and music, online gaming or video calling with overseas friends and family.
NBN 100 plans are the next logical step if you don't think NBN 50 will cut it for you. You get twice the download speed, meaning your connection will go as fast as 100Mbps. Most NBN 100 plans have upload speeds of 20Mbps, which is the same as what you get on NBN 50. We'd say NBN 100 plans are best for large households or anyone who regularly downloads large files, such as new release video games.
NBN 250 plans are another step up. These plans are a little more expensive than what you'd pay for an NBN 100 plan but are perfect if you've got the need for speed.
NBN 250 plans are only available to those who have a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial(HFC) NBN connection.
These are the most popular NBN 50 plans with WhistleOut users this week:
