NBN 100 plans (also known as NBN Fast) are the fastest widely available plans on the National Broadband Network. There are faster NBN speed tiers but most of us can't get them.

Those who have the need for speed will want an NBN 100 plan at a minimum.

NBN 100 plan speeds

Two types of NBN 100 plans exist. Both have a maximum download speed of 100Mbps which is usually the more important figure for most people.

Typical evening speeds explained

Thanks to the ACCC, NBN providers must disclose the typical speeds you can actually expect to get during busy hours (7pm to 11pm) - not just the NBN speed tier the plan is based on. We refer to these as typical evening speeds

Today most NBN 100 plan providers are reporting typical evening speeds that reach the maximum of 100Mbps. While many NBN providers are reporting maximum speeds they may not all perform equally. As an example, the same plan from Telstra might not perform as well as one from Optus. How providers buy capacity from NBN Co can affect the speeds you'll get. This is especially true during busy periods, like at night when everyone is trying to binge Netflix at the same time.

What is the difference between NBN 100/20 and NBN 100/40 plans?

modem

The main difference between NBN 100/20 and NBN 100/40 plans is upload speed.

So why would you choose an NBN 100/20 plan over an NBN 100/40 plan or vice versa? Here are the main benefits of each speed tier:

Choosing NBN 100/20? Expect to save money. To sell you an NBN plan, a provider has to buy it from NBN Co first, at wholesale rates. NBN Co sells NBN 100/20 plans to providers for less which, in most cases, means they'll pass the savings on to you.

For example, Aussie Broadband and Superloop currently sell both types of NBN 100 plans. In both cases, you can save close between $5-10 per month by choosing the plan with 20Mbps upload speed over the provider's 40Mbps option.

Choosing NBN 100/40? Expect faster speeds. If you're looking for high-speed NBN, both NBN 100/20 and NBN 100/40 plans are great choices. But depending on what you need your connection for, the speeds do make a difference.

For example, if you want to upload a 1GB file on an NBN 100/20 connection, it will take approximately seven minutes to complete. However, if you use an NBN 100/40 connection, it will only take around three-and-a-half minutes.

Who is an NBN 100 plan right for?

There are a few different groups of people NBN 100 plans are useful for including larger families of between three to four people, gamers, and small to medium businesses.

Larger families

Your NBN speed is a shared resource. Your 100Mbps is shared between every person and device in your household.

Faster NBN speeds mean there's more capacity to share: you can stream all the video you want while someone else is gaming and no one else will notice any slow-down.

Gamers

NBN 100 plans are great for downloading large files. Considering many new release games are now over 50GB, an NBN 100 plan could be a lifesaver if you prefer to buy your games online.

Note: Other factors, like latency, are far more important to the performance of a game than sheer download speed.

Businesses

The faster upload speeds on NBN 100 plans are a good choice for small and medium businesses.

This is especially true for businesses that handle large files daily that need to be regularly backed up to the cloud through services such as OneDrive, iCloud, or Google Drive.

Expert tip: It may be worth it to upgrade to an NBN 100 plan

Wholesale NBN price changes in recent years saw NBN 100 plans get cheaper and NBN 50 plans get more expensive.
This price gap between them is now very narrow. Factoring in introductory pricing the difference between many providers' NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans is now less than $10.
If you're unhappy with the performance of your NBN 50 plan it might be worth upgrading and taking advantage of near double the download speed.

Is it worth getting an NBN 100 plan?

So long as it meets your needs then an NBN 100 is well worth the money. Very few online activities genuinely require a plan faster than NBN 100. A super-high-speed plan like NBN 250 or NBN 1000 be useful for anyone regularly downloading large files, like new-release video games. Generally, a good internet speed for you is totally dependent on what you use the internet for.

Here's a look at how download times compare between different speed plans:

What's the difference in download times?

So how much of a difference does a faster NBN connection make to your download times? Below we've got a list of common files you might download paired with how long it would take to download them on the fastest NBN speed tiers.

Plans cheaper than NBN 100

If you want to save a few dollars, you could try NBN 50. This option offers download speeds of up to 50Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20Mbps and is the best bang-for-buck option when it comes to NBN.

An NBN 50 plan is still plenty fast and should be enough for most online activities, whether streaming movies and music, gaming with friends online, sharing memes and photos, or video calling with overseas friends and family.

The table below is sorted by the highest typical evening speed. Many NBN providers - such as the ones below - now report typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans, which means you should be able to get very reliable performance during peak hours no matter who you pick.

The luckiest households might be able to get NBN 1000 plan. In theory, these kinds of plans can offer insanely fast download speeds of up to 1Gbps. That would be ten times as fast as NBN 100. In reality, typical evening speeds are closer to 600-650Mbps, that's still really fast. Upload speeds are still relatively conservative, however, maxing out at 50Mbps.

Upgrade from NBN 100: FTTP upgrades

If you can't get an NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plan just yet there's good news on the horizon. Works are underway that will see about 2 million homes and businesses able to get gigabit speeds by last year, with an additional 1.5 million by 2025.

NBN Co is in the midst of rolling out a program that will allow customers on Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) technology types to upgrade to FTTP at no extra cost. Once the infrastructure is live in your area, you'll need to opt-in to get the upgrade to full fibre.

For FTTN customers, you'll need to order an NBN 100 plan or better. This will commence the upgrade process. For FTTC customers, you'll need to get an NBN 250 plan at a minimum.

You can refer to the NBN Co's list of selected areas to check if your address has been connected so far or read more about the FTTP upgrade initiative here

NBN 100 plan FAQs

How much does an NBN 100 plan cost?

NBN 100 plans in WhistleOut's database range from $60 per month to $110 per month, inclusive of six month discounts. If we're looking at the base cost only then they start more expensive at between $81-$85 per month and can go all the way up to $120 per month.

How fast are NBN 100 plans?

NBN 100 plans max out at 100Mbps for downloads. The majority of these plans in WhistleOut's database have typical evening speeds of at least 90Mbps during peak hours but these days there are a handful of providers that are often reporting maximum speeds as being achieved.

In terms of upload speeds you can get plans with up to 20Mbps or up to 40Mbps.

What is NBN 100/40?

Some providers offer NBN 100/40 plans. These are NBN 100 plans that have faster upload speeds of 40Mbps compared to the standard 20Mbps at this speed tier.

An NBN 100/40 plan could be a good choice if you're working from home or for a small business. These plans tend to cost about $5-10 per month more than an equivalent NBN 100/20 plan.

Do I need fast upload speeds?

The average Australian internet user relies more on download speeds for most of their broadband usage. However, if you work from home, regularly use video chat, rely on cloud-based backup services such as Dropbox or Google Drive, or tend to send clients large files, you'll see big benefits from getting a connection with faster upload speeds.

Is NBN 100 good for working from home?

NBN 100 plans are usually targeted towards large households, but working from home can see one person blast through the internet usage of a family of four. If your work is online intensive, or there is more than one of you working from your home, then NBN 100 plans allow you all to work without network interruptions.

Fast upload speeds of up to 40Mbps make this a great option for at home operations, allowing you to share work with clients quickly, or back up your data to the cloud.

While these plans might seem excessive, if you regularly find yourself getting frustrated by NBN 50 speeds then it may be worth considering the extra dollars per month for peace of mind, and for your tax return.

What's the difference between download speeds and upload speeds?

Your download speed refers to how quickly you're able to get files from the internet, while upload speeds relate to how fast you're able to send files to other places online. For example, your upload speeds will determine how long it takes to send an email with a large attachment, back your photos up to Google Drive, or plonk a big document on Dropbox.

Upload speeds can also affect video calls, Voice over IP, and gaming, as these use cases all require both sending and receiving data. However, these three activities don't tend to be overly data-intensive, so the real-world difference between 20Mbps and 40Mbps shouldn't be perceivable in most cases.

How else are NBN speeds measured?

While typical evening speeds are the quickest way to get an indication of a provider's performance, the ACCC's quarterly report reveals real-world NBN performance from some of the fastest NBN providers.

Why am I not getting my advertised NBN speeds?

NBN plans are advertised with a theoretical maximum speed that doesn't prevent you from having a slower connection.

If you've got an FTTN NBN connection, you may experience slower-than-advertised speeds due to your home's distance from the node. Customers within 400 metres of a node should be able to get speeds of up to 100Mbps, while customers further than 700 metres will start to see more significant speed degradation.

Congestion is another possible cause of slow-down. Only noticing slower speeds at certain times of the day? It's probably a congestion issue because everyone else in your neighbourhood is trying to watch the latest Netflix hit simultaneously.

A failing modem can also impact your internet speeds. If you're not sure what speeds you're actually getting, you can run a quick and easy speed test here.
