Your internet speed is typically one of those things you don't notice until something goes wrong, but you also might have found you've accepted a status quo that doesn't match your needs.
In the last few years, faster NBN plans have drawn closer to the once-more-affordable speed tiers of NBN 50 and below, and we've also seen growing coverage and popularity for using 5G home internet as an alternative to the NBN.
In this guide, we'll cover general internet speed performance and expectations of the more common home internet options, uses cases and technologies in detail.
What is a good internet speed (Mbps)?
Just what is a good internet speed depends on your internet plan and your household's specific needs. The former is easy to judge. The latter varies from household to household, so requires a bit more explanation.
You also need to consider uploads alongside download speeds. All internet traffic is two-way, so if your uploads get maxed out, your downloads also grind to a halt until your outbound congestion clears up.
Good internet speeds for specific plans
Until you get to internet plans with high download speed limits of 250Mbps and above, most internet providers have similar overall performance for NBN and 5G home internet plans.
Thankfully, providers are required to advertise the Typical Evening Speeds for each of their home internet plans, though 5G home internet plans tend to skimp on the upload figures. They can give a good indication of what you're signing up to, but are by no means a guarantee.
Below, we've covered some common Typical Evening Speeds for different plan types. If your plan performs significantly under these figures, you can consider it sub-average (if it's close, don't sweat it too much). Anything above can be seen as a good internet speed for your plan type.
| Plan type | Download speed | Upload speed |
|---|---|---|
| NBN 25/5 | 25Mbps | 4Mbps |
| NBN 25/10 | 25Mbps | 8Mbps |
| NBN 50 | 50Mbps | 17Mbps |
| NBN 100/20 | 98Mbps | 17Mbps |
| NBN 100/40 | 98Mbps | 34Mbps |
| NBN 250 | 245Mbps | 21Mbps |
| NBN 1000 | 700Mbps | 42Mbps |
| 5G home internet (50Mbps) | 50Mbps | 15Mbps |
| 5G home internet (100Mbps) | 87-100Mbps | 15Mbps |
| 5G home internet (Uncapped) | 240Mbps | 20-35Mbps |

How to choose a good internet speed for you
It's easy to get bogged down in technicalities, but you don't necessarily need to measure your home internet speed in Mbps to figure out what type of plan might work for you.
While choosing a good internet speed for your needs depends on many factors, it can be simplified to two main factors:
- The number of users in your home
- What they use the internet for
Faster speeds don't only let you download or upload things faster – they also mean there's more capacity to share. If you have enough speed, you can stream all the video you want, download large files, and leave your devices and software to auto-update in peace, and no one else in your home will notice any lag (or, at least, they'll notice less lag for shorter periods).
By far the most common type of home internet service in Australia is NBN 50, which has a download limit of 50Mbps. We find 50Mbps can be enough to cover the average needs of two-to-four people using the internet at the same time. These plans also come with maximum upload speeds of 20Mbps, which is plenty for most scenarios.
Larger households may need the 100Mbps of an NBN 100 plan to accommodate more activity. The same goes for fewer people with many devices, higher data demands, such as large and regular game updates, multiple HD or 4K video streams, and a heavy reliance on cloud storage, among other things.
Similarly, smaller households of one to two people may be able to save money and choose a cheaper NBN 25 plan.
NBN SPEED TIER CHECK
Are you on the right NBN speed?
Your address will be used to check against the nbn’s technology type database. It will not be stored by us.
Finding your ideal speed tier…
We couldn't find a recommendation for those selections. Please try adjusting your answers.
As a rule of thumb, these are the NBN speed tiers you'd need for the following households:
| Speed tier | Best for | Max. speeds |
|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 | Lone, low internet users | 12Mbps |
| NBN 25 | Budget pick for 1-2 people | 25Mbps |
| NBN 50 | All-rounder for small households of 2-4 people | 50Mbps |
| NBN 100 | For WFH and larger households | 100Mbps |
| NBN 250 | Faster speeds for WFH and larger households | 250Mbps |
| NBN 500 | Seamless internet experience when everyone is online | 500Mbps |
| NBN 750 | Even faster speeds for simultaneous use | 750Mbps |
| NBN 1000 | The fastest speeds you can get for less than $100 per month | 1000Mbps |
| NBN 2000 | The fastest speeds you can get right now, at a premium | 2000Mbps |
Of course, the best internet speed for your household might not always be available to you. Internet speed is often determined by the type of technology available at your premises. For example, FTTB, FTTN, and FTTC connections can't sign up to anything faster than NBN 100 (and some FTTN connections even struggle with that).
FTTP and HFC connections can go all the way to NBN 1000. For 5G home internet, uncapped plans can operate at around 220Mbps or higher, but it depends on network coverage in your area.
Fixed Wireless and Satellite NBN connections are generally slower and less reliable. But they're also used in more regional and remote areas, so you might be stuck with what you've got. But Fixed Wireless updates are currently being rollout out, which should improve performance of many connections. Some Satellite NBN premises will also be able to move to Fixed Wireless as part of these upgrades.
How fast is the NBN?
NBN 50 plan speeds
- Common: 48–50Mbps
- Maximum: 50Mbps
- Common: 17–18Mbps
- Maximum: 20Mbps
NBN 50 plans are the most common home internet service in Australia, but they're not as good value as they used to be. Often, you can get an NBN 100 plan for a few dollars more, scoring double the download speed for around the price of a coffee or two extra per month.
But if it's all you need, then it's all you need. They're still a good option for small families and households of three-to-four people who don't have high internet demands. The 20Mbps upload limit is also pretty good, considering a far-faster (for downloads) NBN 250 plan has a 25Mbps upload limit.

NBN 100 plan speeds
- Common: 98–100Mbps
- Maximum: 50Mbps
- Common: 17–18Mbps
- Maximum: 20Mbps
- Common: 34Mbps
- Maximum: 40Mbps
NBN 100 plans are fast becoming the new sweet spot for speed vs. affordability. Though far from being a cheap NBN plan, the difference between an NBN 100/20 plan and a half-as-fast NBN 50 plan from the same provider can be in the single digits per month.
NBN 100/40 plans are a bit more expensive, not to mention rarer. These plans are aimed at people with high upload demands, such as multiple people working from home, a heavy reliance on cloud storage, or large/regular file transfers via the internet.
Most providers report Typical Evening Speeds close or equal to the maximum download speeds for NBN 100 plans. Uploads get close, but are usually don't quite reach their potential.
To see how they compare, check out the fastest NBN 100/20 and NBN 100/40 plans in our database of 34 internet providers, ranked by typical evening download speeds:

NBN 250 plan speeds
- Common: 220–245Mbps
- Maximum: 250Mbps
- Common: 20–22Mbps
- Maximum: 25Mbps
NBN 250 plans are a 'Super Fast' option that will accommodate big households with big internet needs to match. But this is also where you really need to start paying attention to the Typical Evening Speeds for each provider because they can vary quite a bit.
Interestingly, the upload speeds for these plans are capped at 25Mbps, which is only 5Mbps faster than NBN 50 and is well below NBN 100/40.
Unfortunately, you will need to be on a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connection in order to access this speed tier. Other NBN technologies aren't eligible.
These are the fastest NBN 250 plans in our database, ranked by download speeds:

NBN 1000 plan speeds
- Common: 600–850Mbps
- Maximum: 970Mbps
- Common: 40–42Mbps
- Maximum: 50Mbps
The idea of an NBN 1000 plan is enticing – that's roughly gigabit internet speeds. That said, there's a huge range of performance when it comes to NBN 1000, with typical evening download speeds ranging from 969Mbps right down to 250Mbps. But there are plenty of options reporting 700Mbps or faster.
Realistically, most households won't need an NBN 1000 plan. For the most part, this is aimed at large households with huge data demands, enthusiasts, or people who can afford this luxury. You also need an FTTP or HFC connection to sign up to NBN 1000, which rules out the majority of premises in Australia.
Upload speeds are capped at just 50Mbps, which many providers reporting around the 40Mbps mark. That's not too different to the upload speeds of NBN 100/40 plans, so don't go thinking supercharged connection will also deliver super high upload NBN.
Here are the fastest NBN 1000 plans in our database, ranked by download speeds:

NBN 25 plan speeds
- Common: 25Mbps
- Maximum: 25Mbps
- Common: 14Mbps
- Maximum: 5Mbps
- Common: 8Mbps
- Maximum: 10Mbps
NBN 25 plans are best suited to one or two-person households with low or moderate internet demands. There aren't many individual online activities that require a faster download speed than NBN 25, but you may notice slower speeds if multiple people are using your connection at once or if you need to download large files.
As time goes on, the cost of NBN 25 plans are comparing less and less favourably to NBN 100 and above, thanks to changes in how much NBN Co charges ISPs per customer for each given speed tier. But given NBN 50 is suffering the same problem, you'd need to jump way up to NBN 100 before you start getting better value for money.

What about NBN 12?
Even if you're looking for the cheapest internet plan possible, NBN 12 plans are unlikely to be a good option because they often cost more than NBN 25, which itself is getting more expensive at a decent clip. Essentially, you get a slower connection and can pay more for the privilege.
While you might think you can get by on 12Mbps, the real kicker is the harsh 1Mbps upload limit. Uploads aren't just important because they let you backup or send files – if you max out your upload bandwidth, it also tanks your download speed because all internet traffic is two-way, if only to a small degree.
By comparison, an NBN 25 plan has a maximum upload speed of 5Mbps or 10Mbps. This still isn't a lot, but it's a significant step up from 1Mbps.
How fast is home wireless internet?
Home wireless internet is a fast-growing alternative to the NBN. These internet plans are delivered over the 4G and 5G networks your phone uses, except they come with a WiFi modem, similar to the one you might use for the NBN.
The conditions that affect your home wireless internet speed include the strength of coverage at your address, congestion on the mobile network and what hardware you're using to connect, among other things.
5G home internet plan speeds
5G home internet plans are the most widely-available alternative to the NBN, and are offered across three options for maximum download speeds:
- 50Mbps
- 100Mbps
- Uncapped
The first two are equivalent to the download speeds you would expect on an NBN 50 or NBN 100 plan, while uncapped speeds are roughly comparable to NBN 250.
As for hardware, 5G home internet plans come with a 5G WiFi modem. If you leave your plan within 24 or 36 months (depending on your provider), you must return the modem in good working order or pay a hardware fee, usually within 30 days. But if you stay long enough, you get to keep it.
Optus is the exception, which charges a hardware fee of $13 for every month shy you are of 36 from when you signed up. Once again, if you make it to 36 months, the modem is yours.
Here are the fastest 5G home internet plans in our database for each of the three speed tiers:
- Common: 50Mbps
- Maximum: 50Mbps
- Common: 15Mbps

4G home internet plan speeds
- Common: 16–25Mbps
- Maximum: 20 or 25Mbps
- Common: 2–5Mbps
Most 4G home internet plans are capped to a max download speed of 20Mbps and perform at around 16Mbps for downloads and 2Mbps for uploads. Some plans on the Optus network have a 25Mbps limit and get around 5Mbps uploads.
This latter option is what's you'd expect from an NBN 25 plan, and would probably suit a household of one to two light to medium internet users. It's sufficient for all regular internet activities, like video streaming, music streaming, video calls, and gaming, though not typically for multiple concurrent users.

Download speed vs. upload speed
Your download speed is how quickly your device or home can receive data from the internet. This includes downloading files and updates, but also streaming, loading web pages, and pretty much most of anything you do online.
Upload speeds refer to your outbound data – i.e. anything you send out into the internet. Some of the more common upload-intensive activities are cloud storage (automated or manual), video calls, and transferring large files to anyone outside your home's local network.
It's crucial that both your download and upload needs are met. All internet traffic is two-way, so if you're uploading more than your connection can handle, your ability to download is also heavily affected, and vice versa.
Think of it like having a conversation with a friend, where your friend's words are data you're downloading, and yours are data being uploaded. If your uploads are fine, you can respond at a normal rate and keep the conversation going. But if it takes you several seconds to reply, the whole conversation grinds to a halt each time you do.
If your home's internet regularly drops out, it might be because you have automated backups set for one or more devices. For example, the default settings of Google Photos wait for you to connect to a WiFi network before backing up your most recent pics. Another common example might be Microsoft OneDrive for Windows users, which can continuously update your online files as you work on them throughout the day.
