What is an NBN connection box?

An NBN connection box is one of a handful of names for an NBN modem, which is confusing because the term ‘modem’ is used in reference to routers and modem routers. Fun! The chances are good you have an NBN connection box in your home, which may also be called an NBN Network Termination Device, or NBN NTD for short.

Whatever you call it, for most NBN technologies, the NBN connection box has the same function: sending and receiving data, before connecting to a router that shares the internet connection around your home.

Whichever NBN technology connects your home and whichever NBN connection box is used to get you online, this piece of networking gear is where NBN Co’s network liability ends. That said, if you do have problems like slow internet, troubleshooting typically starts by talking to your NBN provider.

How much does an NBN connection box cost?

An NBN connection box should be free of charge. The only fees you should expect to pay that are related to an NBN connection box are for non-standard installations, but you’ll be told if you need one of those during installation. Standard installations of NBN equipment, including an NBN connection box, are free.

Which NBN technologies need an NBN connection box?

There are five of the seven NBN technologies that use an NBN connection box (listed below in order of highest speed potential):

Because the NBN connection box acts as a modem, all of the NBN technologies listed above need to connect to a router via ethernet cable. The router then shares the NBN connection via wireless (WiFi) or wired (ethernet) connections.

The two NBN technologies not listed above are Fibre to the Building (FTTB) and Fibre to the Node (FTTN), both of which use VDSL2-compatible modem routers. A modem router is a single networking device that combines the function of an NBN connection box and router.

Which NBN technology connects my home?

Punch in your address on the NBN Co website to see which NBN technology is used to connect your home. The results page will tell you which of the technologies listed above connects you to the NBN under the "Technology used in your connection" section.

Where is my NBN connection box?

If you’re moving into a different home that connects to the NBN with those five connection box technologies listed above, the NBN connection box should already be there if NBN has been connected before. Whenever you move out of a home connected to the NBN, it’s important to leave the NBN connection box there for the next tenant, though you’re free to take the router with you (unless it’s one that has to be returned to an NBN provider).

For those moving into a newly built home, a place that’s never been connected to the NBN, or one missing an NBN connection box, the process for getting an NBN modem is the same: sign up for a plan with an NBN provider. Depending on the NBN technology type, an NBN connection box will either be sent to you for self-installation or your provider will liaise with you to organise a time for an NBN technician to visit and configure an NBN connection box (and potentially other equipment) that they bring with them.

You'll only need to worry about an NBN connection box if you're signing up for an NBN internet plan over one of the technology types listed above.

All fixed-line NBN technologies can sign up for NBN 12 through to NBN 100. The NBN 50 speed tier is the most popular in Australia, and available to fixed-line connections.

All FTTP and HFC abodes can connect to NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans, which are the fastest available in Australia.

NBN connection box installation

Most NBN technologies that come with an NBN connection box are installed by an NBN technician as part of an installation appointment. There are some HFC and FTTC homes that are eligible for self-installation, but these homes should also receive installation instructions. Alternatively, NBN Co has self-installation video guides for FTTC and HFC.

Whether you’re connecting via self-installation or technician-assisted installation, select an NBN connection box location that’s central and accessible. An NBN technician may not be able to put the NBN connection box in your preferred spot, but they’ll discuss this with you. Depending on the technology type, some drilling may be required alongside the installation of additional NBN equipment.

For FTTB and FTTN homes, speak with your NBN provider about a modem router. Depending on the NBN provider, they’ll either send you a modem router as part of your plan, give you the option to purchase one or pay it off, or they’ll be able to advise on which models to purchase.
