Tangerine was our choice for the best internet provider in the Unlimited NBN category. Part of the reason it took top spot is thanks to winning the Best Unlimited NBN Provider award for the fifth straight year thanks to its approach of providing simple and affordable plans.

Dodo took home our award for best internet provider in the Premium NBN category. Dodo is making some big strides in NBN provision, offering consumers great value and speeds. If you're looking for a competitive, fast NBN provider, Dodo's low-cost, no-frills plans are great options.

Exetel was the runner up in both NBN categories. This telco also offers good value NBN plans, and allows customers to bundle their mobile and internet services to receive a discount. The telco's Slash My Bill feature operates on a 'the more you bundle, the more you save' basis. Bundle savings start at $5 for one additional service, up to $15 per month for five additional services.

Home wireless can be split into two very different products: 4G and 5G home internet.

5G home internet is a fast, affordable, and viable alternative to the NBN. And like the NBN, its plans are sorted into speed tiers, which are 50Mbps, 100Mbps, and uncapped.

4G home internet sits somewhere between NBN 12 and NBN 25 in terms of performance, and so is only for households with very low internet needs. But these plans have the benefit of being very cheap.

Optus was our 2024 pick for best internet provider of 5G Home Wireless. The 12 months prior had seen 5G Home Wireless Broadband become a strong and widely available competitor to NBN services, which has prompted the introduction of this award category. Offering strong speeds at competitive prices, the Optus 5G Home Wireless plans consistently offered great value throughout that 12 month period. The runner-up was Telstra.

TPG was our pick for best 4G home wireless provider. This telco has also proved itself to be one of the most competitive and consistent home internet providers, with consistently strong speeds at competitive prices. The runner up was Vodafone.

Expert tip: Most internet providers report good NBN speeds

If your search for the best internet service provider (ISP) is focused on speed, there's not much difference between most telcos for NBN 100 plans and under.

"Just about every internet provider in Australia reports typical evening speeds of 95Mbps or above for fixed-line NBN 100 plans.

Performance is more varied once you get to NBN 250. And for NBN 1000, there can be huge differences. So if you're after a Superfast or Ultrafast NBN plan, check the advertised typical evening speeds before signing up."

Internet provider pricing

When searching for the best internet provider for your needs, be careful to double-check the fine print around plan pricing. In particular, many or most NBN plans these days offer one price for the first six or so months, after which the monthly cost goes up.

Your chosen internet provider might also force or strongly encourage you to include a WiFi modem in your monthly repayments. In these cases, cancelling the plan within a given time frame can incur additional fees (to pay off the WiFi modem).

How we pick the best NBN providers

We pick the best NBN providers through the annual WhistleOut Awards. We have reviewed the biggest cross-section of providers possible, including the top 10 service providers in each category and many smaller providers. The top ten service providers typically cover 80% or more of Australia’s phone and internet plans.

The WhistleOut Award categories for internet plans are judged by awarding 3, 2 and 1 points to the providers of the three best plans in each category every month, (July 2023 to June 2024). When judging plans, we consider 12-month costs, features and perks, typical evening speeds, and support channels.

In terms of support, we consider the breadth of support options available to customers, coupled with feedback from customer review aggregators. Due to the scope of telcos we track, we have not personally tested support services for each provider.

The award winners are the providers with the most points at the end of the 12-month period. In case of a tie, winners are chosen based on the number of 1st positions, then 2nd positions, then 3rd positions they achieved in that category over the year. A provider can receive points for multiple plans in a category if their plans best match the award criteria.

The exception to this is the sustainability award, which is judged based on telco submissions.

For the "best unlimited NBN provider" category we look at NBN 50 plans. For the "best premium NBN provider" category, we look at NBN 100. When considering the "best fixed wireless NBN provider" category, we judge it based on Fixed Wireless Plus plans.

The 2024 WhistleOut Awards, which were given to the NBN providers in this guide, were announced on August 1.

FAQs for choosing the best internet provider

Now you've had an introduction to some of Australia's internet providers, let's look at a few dos and don'ts when picking a new internet plan for your household.

Are you happy to switch internet providers often?

One of the surest ways to save money on your monthly bills is to switch internet providers regularly. It's pretty easy to do, and you can genuinely save decent dollars with only a few minutes of effort a couple of times per year.

This is because a lot of internet providers in Australia offer introductory discounts. They can be any length, but are usually for six months, after which they go up to an "ongoing" price. They can also include temporary perks like free access to a streaming service. And because standard plans don't come with contracts, you can sidle off and grab another discount as soon as yours is done.

If this sounds like a good idea to you, the best internet provider will often be whichever is offering the cheapest or most enticing deal right now. If you end up not being a fan of their product or customer service, you can move on again without much effort.

Just make sure your current plan doesn't involve you paying off a "free" modem router or some other type of hardware before you jump ship.

How much data do you need?

Your data needs will depend on what you use your internet connection for, but the modern market makes it pretty easy – most home internet providers only offer unlimited plans for home internet, so your usage doesn't really matter. There are still a few plans with large limits, such as 1TB, but only the most data-hungry households will come close to this.

Some internet providers still offer smaller plans, such as 200GB per month. This might cover your family, but it won't cost much more to get an unlimited data plan and use the internet worry free.

How fast should your internet plan be?

Choosing the speed of an internet plan is an important consideration, but it can be hard to find the sweet spot without experimentation.

For example, if you choose a 25Mbps NBN plan, and you have six people in your house regularly using the internet, if everyone is online at once then they're only getting about 4Mbps each, which will quickly start to fray those relationships.

For most homes, we recommend you start with NBN 50 or NBN 100 plans. While NBN 50 speeds are more than enough for many households, NBN 100 plans can be better value for money thanks to incentivised pricing from NBN Co.

Should you get an internet plan on contract?

For the most part, NBN plans are contract-free. Very few internet providers ask you to commit to a longer contract, but in some cases, you can sign up to avoid paying a modem fee if you need new hardware.

This lack of contracts is great because many internet providers in Australia will charge a lower monthly price for the first six months, then raise your monthly payments thereafter. Changing internet providers every six months is a great way to save money (switching internet providers is usually pretty easy), but be sure to keep an eye on the calendar to avoid paying extra.

You should also check if you're required to include extra hardware in your monthly payments, such as a WiFi router. If you do, you'll still need to pay off the outstanding amount for the hardware if you decide to switch providers – though you might also be able to return it and avoid the fee.
