Ready for Australia’s Fastest NBN plans

Recent changes to nbn plans have sped up internet in Australia dramatically, with some speeds on some plans up to 2000 Megabits per second (Mbps). The Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem is future-proofed for these fast nbn plans, with world-beating Wi-Fi 7 technology and an easily overlooked but necessary feature: a 2.5 Gigabit per second (Gbps) internet port.

For comparison, most older modems have a 1Gbps WAN port and aren’t suitable for making the most of new ultra-fast nbn plans. If you sign up for an nbn 2000 plan (with maximum download speeds of 2Gbps), your old modem will limit your speed, and you simply cannot get what you paid for.

The 2.5Gbps port on the Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem solves that problem. It ensures the modem can handle the maximum speeds that come through your nbn connection, making it suitable for customers on the fastest Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) services.

If 5G mobile internet is a better option at your address, Vodafone also offers a 5G Super Wi-Fi modem, which offers all of the same bleeding-edge tech features we’ll discuss throughout this article.

The Super Wi-Fi family (from left to right): the 5G Super Wi-Fi Modem, the nbn Super Wi-Fi Modem and the Super Wi-Fi Mesh access point.

Why Wi-Fi 7 Matters

The backbone of the Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem is new Wi-Fi 7 technology. This is the latest and fastest standard for wireless internet, and sets your home network up for the future. From here on, the best new phones, laptops, and smart appliances will use Wi-Fi 7, and the Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem is prepared for the higher speeds and higher bandwidth needs of tomorrow’s tech.

The key to this improved performance is a feature called Multi-Link Operation (MLO). With older Wi-Fi, your device could only use one radio signal (band) at a time to communicate with the modem. These signals usually operate on the 2.4 GHz band, which offers greater range, or the 5 GHz band, which allows for faster speeds. With MLO, a compatible device can now use multiple signals at the same time.

Think of it this way: instead of one single water pipe, MLO lets the data flow through two pipes at once. This means two important things for your connection:

  1. Stability: The connection is more dependable. If one signal gets busy or weak, the other signal is there for backup. This stops buffering and lag.

  2. Speed: Using two signals means the modem can move a lot more data, much faster. This results in quicker downloads and a smoother experience when watching 4K video.

The difference in speed is clear for devices that support Wi-Fi 7. They get the best possible connection, while older devices will still connect well too. The Vodafone Super Wi-Fi modem ensures that your network is ready for the fastest technology on the market today and the new devices we’ll see over the next few years.

Easy to Set Up and Works with All NBN Types

One of the great practical benefits of this equipment is its simple design. It is a modem-router in one unit. This means it combines the modem part, which connects to the nbn, and the router part, which creates your home Wi-Fi.

Because it is an all-in-one unit, it works with all nbn technologies: FTTP, HFC, Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), and Fibre to the Node/Building (FTTN/B). If you have FTTN or FTTB, this single box gives you everything you need to connect.

For Vodafone customers, getting started is straightforward. The device arrives at your house with your account details pre-configured. You just plug it into the wall to connect. You can then connect your new Super Wi-Fi Modem in the Vodafone My Internet Connect app and adjust settings and set up parental controls.

Reliable Performance, No Restarts Needed

Given the importance of an internet connection in our daily lives, a modem-router needs to just work. You shouldn’t have to regularly power-cycle (switch it off and back on) to keep the signal strong.

We tested the Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem, running it through our standard battery of tests, and this modem held up exceptionally well, both in speed and signal tests, as well as extended use over time. It maintained a low-latency connection, which is key for tasks like online gaming. Over the course of our testing, the modem handled every common task without any dropouts or major slowdowns.

We’re not alone in this opinion. Vodafone enlisted independent researchers, Allion Labs, to benchmark the Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem alongside a dozen other wireless access points. Allion is a leading global engineering and consulting firm specialising in wireless performance testing, certification, and optimisation, and in these tests it found the Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem to be the top performer across key metrics like data throughput.

TPG Telecom commissioned Allion Labs, an independent test laboratory, to conduct a comprehensive performance benchmarking evaluation of in market Wi-Fi access points. The benchmarking adhered to BBF TR-398, a globally recognised standard for evaluating in-home wireless router performance.

Of course, internet outages on nbn connections can happen. When they do, they can stop work, disrupt study, and cut off communication. The Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem includes a useful feature to deal with this: a mobile wireless hotspot backup.

If the NBN goes down, you can connect the Super Wi-Fi 7 Modem to your smartphone internet using your phone’s Hotspot feature. Once connected, the modem will share your phone’s mobile network connection to power the Wi-Fi network in your home. The Vodafone modem can store the connection details of up to 3 different hotspots, giving you flexibility and convenience during a network outage or maintenance.

Making it all Mesh

We all know that the Wi-Fi is fastest when you are standing next to your Wi-Fi router, but what about at the opposite end of your home or office? While we’ve found that the Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem is a strong performer in our Wi-Fi tests, there will be some homes in need of a signal boost.

To ensure everyone, in every room, gets a solid, reliable connection, Vodafone has also launched the Super Wi-Fi Mesh. If you’re new to the concept, a mesh unit connects to your router to bring wi-fi coverage as a single network to challenging areas. There’s no need for separate network names and passwords, your device will seamlessly switch between routers as you move around your home.

The Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Mesh access points offer the same super-fast Wi-Fi 7 technology as the modems, and meet the industry EasyMesh standards, so are compatible with other EasyMesh devices from other manufacturers.

Best of all, we found the setup to be painless. We just opened the Vodafone My Internet Connect app, scanned a QR on the bottom of the router and the app did the rest.

The Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem is a highly capable and forward-thinking piece of networking hardware. Its advanced Wi-Fi 7 technology, its ability to support the fastest NBN speeds, and its built-in, flexible mobile backup feature make it an excellent choice for building a fast and reliable network in your home, and Vodafone’s Super Wi-Fi Mesh router is available for when those homes are on the larger size. Head over to the Vodafone site to see it for yourself.
