Why disable CGNAT?
CGNAT and NBN providers

If you’ve ever had port forwarding fail or trouble hosting a server – gaming, media or email – there’s a good chance CGNAT is to blame. This invisible internet initialism won’t impact most everyday NBN users, but it can be a pain when performing non-standard hosting tasks. Here’s everything you need to know about CGNAT, including what it means and how to disable it, as well as the best NBN providers to seek out if you’d rather not worry about it at all.

Before we get into that, here’s a breakdown of today’s most popular NBN plans from providers that let you opt out of CGNAT, or which don't have it in the first place:

What is CGNAT?

CGNAT is inelegantly short for ‘carrier-grade network address translation’. Let’s break that down. ‘Carrier-grade’ means it’s handled by your NBN provider. And ‘network address translation’ refers to the behind-the-scenes system that converts private IP addresses (i.e. devices on your local network) into a public-facing IP address (i.e. your internet IP address).

In years gone by, CGNAT wasn’t necessary for internet connections as there were plenty of public IPv4 addresses to go around: close to 4.3 billion of them! But when you put that number in the context of availability for the entire world, it doesn’t seem so big. Cue the entry of CGNAT to solve the problem of dwindling IPv4 addresses. Basically, an internet provider that uses CGNAT will allocate a single internet IP address to multiple homes.

Why disable CGNAT?

Disabling CGNAT isn’t essential, especially given that streaming, online gaming, web browsing, social media, and emails are unaffected by it. But it falls apart if a CGNAT-impacted user wants to forward ports. Port forwarding is required to, say, host a dedicated Counter-Strike 2 server for you and your friends to play on, share media while you’re away from your home internet, or if you want to set up your own email hosting.

CGNAT effectively handles port forwarding – a necessary step for hosting servers – at an NBN provider level, rather than the individual user. It's impossible to forward those ports on your home connection if your internet has CGNAT enabled. Speaking from experience here, you can try to forward those ports, and your router, modem-router or mesh WiFi system may even tell you the ports have been forwarded, but they won’t actually be opened, so the server you want to host won’t ever communicate with the internet.

The most straightforward solution is to go with an NBN provider that doesn’t use CGNAT or choose one that allows you to opt out of CGNAT altogether. Alternatively, go for an NBN provider that offers a static IP address monthly add-on or one that uses the newer IPv6 instead of IPv4. Here's a list of popular NBN plans from our database that’s comprised of providers who let you pay an extra monthly fee for a static IP address:

Other CGNAT providers

Buddy Telco is a budget brand owned by Aussie Broadband. All Buddy Telco customers will have CGNAT connections, but there’s no way to opt out. Buddy does offer a $5-per-month static IP address, plus it supports IPv6.

Flip and Origin Broadband are similar to Buddy Telco: pay either $1.98 per month (Flip) or $5 (Origin) for a static IP address. Alternatively, use IPv6 to get around CGNAT. Kogan Internet, Mate, and Vodafone all reportedly use CGNAT, but while you seemingly can't opt out, they also support IPv6 as a CGNAT workaround. Belong, on the other hand, has CGNAT enabled, but there's no way to disable it.

If you’re not worried about the impact of CGNAT, consider one of these popular NBN plans from one of those providers.
