NBN Co will give every single Fibre to the Node (FTTN) home and business the opportunity to upgrade technology type by the end of 2030.
95% of the remaining 622,000 FTTN addresses will be able to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), which is widely considered to be the best NBN technology type thanks to faster speeds and increased reliability.
NBN Co says the remaining 5% "require further design work to confirm the appropriate upgrade path". Some of these may be given the option to upgrade to "next-generation technologies" instead of FTTP.
Over half of the new addresses eligible for FTTP upgrades are in regional areas, including the Hunter Valley, Alice Springs, Barossa, Mornington Peninsula, and Bendigo.
Metro areas covered by the new wave of upgrades include Newcastle, the Central Coast, Geelong, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Tuggeranong, and Ipswich. There are also parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, and Perth included in the total.
This round of upgrades adds to the 3.5 million FTTN addresses that will be able to swap to FTTP NBN by the end of the year. There are also around a million Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) customers that are also eligible for FTTP upgrades.
Notably, upgrading from FTTN or FTTC to FTTP is free. To qualify for an upgrade, a customer simply needs to order an NBN 100 plan or faster from a participating NBN provider. Read more about the process of requesting a free FTTP upgrade here.
This new round of upgrades is being funded through a $3 billion equity investment from the Federal Government. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the upgrades as completing the NBN rollout.
"Labor created the National Broadband Network, and only Labor will finish the NBN and, importantly, keep the NBN in public hands," said Albanese.
NBN Co is investing $800 million in the upgrades itself.
