Ring has announced the local launch of Smart Video Search, a new AI feature that allows users to search for specific moments in their Ring Event History.
The feature, which is powered by Ring IQ, works using Visual Language Modelling (VLM) to match text to images and quickly drive results.
With Smart Video Search Ring users can type queries directly into the Ring app on their phone to locate the particular event they're after rather than scrolling through hours of footage.
It works similarly to how Google or Apple's Photos apps are able to identify and catalogue images and then surface all the results related to a keyword, e.g. bringing up all the pictures of canines in your phone when you search "Dogs" – but in this case with video.
For example, a user might enter the terms "person delivering a package" to locate all the times their Ring doorbell camera detected someone holding packages at the door.
Smart Video Search will be available in Australia and New Zealand from today in beta and can answer queries related to animals, locations, packages, people, vehicles, weather and activities. It can also use time-related queries to narrow down the search time frame, for example "when did the postal worker come on Friday".
Users can opt in and out of which of their Ring devices work with the Smart Video Search function, and it is backward compatible with all existing Ring devices.
Ring's Smart Video Search feature is available to all users subscribed to Ring's Home Premium plan, which is available for $29.95 per month.
Other benefits of the Ring Home Premium plan include 24/7 recording and continuous live view.
