SpinTel has upgraded the modem bundled with its 5G home internet plans, switching from the now oldish Nokia FastMile to Optus' Ultra WiFi 5G Modem.
Built by ZTE, the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G modem is able to handle up to 128 devices at once, and supports WiFi 7. WiFi 7 supports network speeds four times faster than WiFi 6, maxing out at 46Gbps.
The Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Modem is available with every SpinTel 5G home internet plan. SpinTel's 5G home internet plans are powered by the Optus mobile network. Here are the plans:
Customers need to pay $25 in shipping.
It's important to note that you don't own your 5G modem on a SpinTel plan. You'll need to return it within 21 days when you leave, and if you don't, you'll get hit with a hefty hardware fee. SpinTel has yet to update its non-return pricing for the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Modem, but customers who didn't return the previously offered Nokia FastMile were up for $935.
As long as you're punctual in returning the 5G modem, that isn't necessarily a bad proposition. For comparison, if you leave an Optus 5G home internet plan within your first three years, you'll pay a prorated hardware fee of $13 for each month in your term. There's no option to return the modem to pay nothing.
SpinTel 5G home internet plans tend to sit at the cheaper end of the market, but there are cheaper options from providers like TPG. Here's how its 100Mbps plan compares to alternatives:
