First unveiled back in July, Starlink's backpack-friendly Mini satellite dish is finally available in Australia.
The dish itself will set you back $799 and it can be paired with one of two plans. Mini Roam which costs $80 per month for 50GB of data or Mobile Regional which costs $174 per month and has unlimited mobile data.
The Mini Roam plan is described as being best for "weekend travellers, back up internet and in-motion use" while Mobile Regional is better suited for users with caravans, motorhomes, campers and longer travels.
It's similar to using a portable WiFi modem but utilises the Starlink low-earth orbit satellite network rather than a terrestrial mobile network. The Mini does need a power source, it can be charged by a portable battery and USB-C cable with a 100-watt minimum.
The hardware alone costs $200 more than a standard Starlink kit at $599. With a data cap the Mini Roam plan is cheaper than the $139 per month Standard plan with unlimited data, which is intended for household use.
A note on the service plans page says Mini Roam plan users can use "in-motion beyond 10Mph". However, the critical information summary for the regular Regional plan states the regular service may not be used while in motion but can be used in different fixed locations. This means you'll need the Mini Roam plan if you intend to use the service while underway.
While speeds aren't guaranteed the critical information summary for Starlink's mobile plans points to download speeds ranging between 75Mbps and 240Mbps. This is similar to where some mobile plan providers are capping speeds. Although, unlike a mobile plan you aren't limited to a mobile network signal.
