WhistleOut analysed Google Trends to discover what's on Australia's mind over Xmas and New Year
Commenting on the Google Trends data, WhistleOut spokesperson Kenny McGilvary said, “One of the great things about Google search data is that it doesn’t lie. People are honest on Google.
“The data suggests Australians really are in different mindsets over Christmas and New Year. Party mode is in full swing during the Xmas break, as you might expect, but we do then appear to focus much more on our future goals after the year has come to an end.
“Movie blockbusters clearly hold large appeal for us over Christmas with high numbers of searches for movie titles and cinema chains. These are closely followed by search interest in Boxing Day sales and people looking for specific retailers. Camping, caravaning and outdoor activities round out Australia’s top three search topics the week of Christmas, with the cricket and NYE celebrations not far behind.
“Our focus changes radically come the new year with job-related searches peaking, especially for employment sites like SEEK and Indeed. A wide range of health related search takes place at the start of January, ranging from Weight Watchers and Lite ‘n Easy options to medical conditions. Education is also high on our radar in the new year with many people searching out course options.
“Perhaps the most surprising discovery is the nation’s consistently high search interest in various lottery and gambling options across both periods. Lotto, Powerball and TattsLotto results are all widely searched. Perhaps it indicates people are buying each other lottery tickets as stocking fillers, though we’re not overly confident that’s the case.”
