Joel Gibson - WhistleOut Brand Ambassador

Hey there,

It's Joel Gibson here, your WhistleOut Savings Specialist.

Today, I'm excited to share something a bit different with you: my annual ‘Emmy-ometer’. Instead of focusing on which shows or actors got the most buzz at TV's biggest awards ceremony last night, I’m diving into which streaming services offer the most value based on their Emmy nominations. Spoiler alert: Disney+ is leading the pack this year!

Watch the video or read on to find out how each streaming service stacks up and which ones are delivering the hottest content right now.

Cheers,

Try My 'Emmy-Ometer' To Find The Best Streaming Value

Every year, the Emmy nominations are announced and every year, people count up which shows got the most nods (Shogun, The Bear, Only Murders in the Building) and which Aussies were in the list (Naomi Watts and Elizabeth Debicki this time around).

But not me. Instead, every year I count up which streaming services are the most-nominated, because I think that's a good clue to which ones are the best value for money right now.

I call it “The Emmy-ometer”. And this year, the top 4 are Disney+,Apple TV+, Netflix and Binge.

Disney+ has smashed it out of the park with 48 nominations, Apple TV+ and Netflix are equal-second with 36 nods, and Binge is 4th with 29. Prime was 5th.

WhistleOut's Emmy-Ometer

Now of course, this is a limited comparison: it focuses on US series, not Australian, and it's based on TV not movies. Big Aussie hits such as Colin From Accounts (Binge) and Boy Swallows Universe (Netflix) don't register in this comparison.

It also ignores sport and other content. The AFL and the NRL right now are on Kayo and 9Now, for example, while the Olympics were on 9Now and Stan. I also focused on the main awards and left out some of the more obscure categories and shows that just don’t make it to Australia. But it's a handy barometer to who has the hottest imported drama and comedy shows each year and this year Disney+ is running hot thanks to three big shows:

  • Shogun, the adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 bestselling novel, with 25 nominations;

  • Fine-dining family drama (or is it a comedy?) The Bear, with 23; and

  • The Steve Martin-Martin Short-Selena Gomez whodunnit Only Murders in the Building with 21.

At AppleTV+, the best performers were The Morning Show (aka Morning Wars) with 16 and Slow Horses with 6.

At Netflix, it was The Crown with 18 and Baby Reindeer with 6.

And at Binge, the top performers were True Detective: Night Country with 19 and Feud: Capote vs. The Swans with 4.

It's not always easy to work out where to watch a show in Australia, because they might start on one streaming service in the US and end up on another one here thanks to differing rights deals.

In the US, for example, Netflix got the most nominations, followed by FX, HBO and Apple TV+.

Handy Tip

To find where you can watch a show down under, I usually use two sources: Just Watch and flicks.com.au. Just punch the title into one or both of those websites and they'll tell you where to stream or rent just about any TV series or movie you've heard of.
