Most of the time when we're talking about mobile plans we talk about them in terms of months. You pay "X amount" for a plan and receive "Y value" as a set of inclusions that last for around a 30-day period after which they typically reset.
However, there are some circumstances where telcos will let you hold onto any value still left on your plan to the next month (and in a lot of cases indefinitely so long as you stay signed up). Because most plans have unlimited calls and texts we're only really talking about data. This is why this feature is called data rollover or data banking.
In the below table, we've listed every mobile provider in our database that supports data rollover, sorted by how much data they allow you to bank.

How does data banking work?

To understand data banking it's easiest to explain with an example of how it works.
Scenario: You're signed up for a 28-day expiry plan with data banking. Your plan comes with 12GB of data. Over the course of the 28 days you use 8GB out of your 12GB allowance leaving 4GB of data unused.
When your plan inclusions "reset" at the start of the next 28-day period you get another 12GB of data, plus the 4GB of data you didn't use. Now you have 16GB of data total to use over that 28-day period.
This is the rolling-over part. Where the term banking comes into play is that some telcos have a limit to how much data they're willing to let you store. In this scenario, you've got 12GB of data to use and 4GB of data "banked".
Most telcos are pretty generous with the amount of data they allow you to bank - it's usually hundreds of gigabytes. Once your "banked data" is full you will stop accruing any leftovers.
Usually, your current recharge data is used first followed by any rollover or banked data. Some providers use the term "data banking" while others prefer "data rollover", we've opted to use the terms chosen by each provider when discussing its plans.

Is data banking worth it?
There are a few situations where data banking can be a mobile plan feature that's worth seeking out.
If your data needs vary month to month or you like to have a little buffer or if you like to have a little extra data just in case, getting a plan with data rollover can reduce the risk of excess fees and even mean you pay less per month for your plan.
"I know that like the average Australian I use between 10 and 12GB of data per month. So, I switched from a 20GB unlimited data plan to a cheaper 12GB plan with data rollover."
"The first few months I did need to be careful to manage my data so that the bank could build up but now I have a neat little cache of extra data to tap into. Best of all I'm not paying for data I don't need."
Dylan Crismale, Digital Content Editor
It might not be the best option if you regularly come close to using up all your data as there'll be very little data to rollover. If that's you, you may want to consider an unlimited mobile data plan.
If you're signed up for a plan with data banking and find you easily reach the data bank cap this might be a sign you're paying for much more data than you need and it could be a good idea to switch mobile plans.
Remember to double-check the terms and conditions carefully to make sure you don't lose your banked data.
