Australians are fleeing from the cost of maintaining a landline in their homes, with near 20% of Aussies now relying solely on mobile phones to stay in touch.
The figure comes from a new report released by the Australian Communication and Media Authority today, who say that 3.3-million Australians over 18 have "[replaced] their fixed-line home phone with a mobile."
Breaking the figures down into demographics, the ACMA findings are not particularly surprising. Aussies aged 25-34 are most likely to have ditched the home phone (39%), while those of us living with our parents are most likely to still have a phone line in the house we live in (12%).
Sharehouses are the places most likely to be sans line rental, with 48% of these types of dwellings going without a fixed line connection, and the monthly bill that goes along with one.
Perhaps more surprising is the number of Australians who don't bother with internet at home, using their mobile data plan are their sole source of after-hours interwebs. 35% of people without a phone line (1.1 million Aussies) forgo fixed-line broadband, relying on connections at work, school or friend's houses when they are not using their phones to get online.
