Each month, WhistleOut's team of experts picks the best Fixed Wireless NBN plans across three speeds: 100Mbps, 250Mbps, and 25Mbps.
If you're looking for a new Fixed Wireless NBN plan, we typically recommend Fixed Wireless Plus (up to 100Mbps) plans or faster, because they offer the best potential speeds. This is especially important, as Fixed Wireless NBN can be more prone to congestion during busy hours.
While every NBN provider sells fixed-line NBN plans, there aren’t as many that sell Fixed Wireless NBN plans. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t great deals to be found.
When making our monthly picks for the best Fixed Wireless NBN plans, we look at criteria including the cost of a plan over a year, typical evening speeds, support options, and other perks. For Fixed Wireless Plus, we only consider plans with unlimited data.
Read on for our picks for the best Fixed Wireless plans for September.
Best Fixed Wireless NBN plan (Max 100Mbps)

Dodo reports typical evening speeds of 70Mbps on this Fixed Wireless NBN plan, but you'll be able to get speeds as fast as 100Mbps. Fixed Wireless Plus plans are the most popular type of Fixed Wireless NBN plan, and should work well for most users.

Best Fixed Wireless NBN plan (Max 250Mbps)
This plan from Tangerine is one of the few Fixed Wireless NBN plans that offer download speeds of up to 250Mbps. Its current promo also makes it one of the cheapest plans on this speed tier.
You'll pay $67.90 per month for the first six months, then $92.90 per month thereafter.
If you choose to go with Tangerine and need a new modem, Tangerine has options starting from $0.
While there's no typical evening speed reported on the Tangerine plan, the plan is contract-free, so you can choose to switch anytime if you are not satisfied with the connection you are getting.
250Mbps Fixed Wireless NBN plans are best suited to more demanding users, especially heavy downloaders and larger households. They're a solid upgrade over a Fixed Wireless Plus plan.

This Swoop plan is currently the best Fixed Wireless option for the NBN 25 speed tier for September. Swoop is offering unlimited data for $69 per month at full price. With its current promotion, you'll get $15 per month off for the first six months - that's $54 per month.

“If you're looking to get the best price on a Fixed Wireless NBN plan possible, your best option is swapping plans every six months.
Many NBN providers - like some of the Fixed Wireless options we've highlighted in this guide - offer a honeymoon discount to new customers for the first six months. After those six months are up, customers need to pay full price. These plans are contract-free, however, so you're able to leave after your discount runs out, and swap to a new provider that has the same kind of offer.
While this is a bit of work, it's the simplest way to keep your NBN bill as low as possible."

Fixed wireless NBN plans used to suck, but now they’re not so bad.
Just a few years ago, Fixed Wireless NBN would cap out at 75Mbps download speeds. These days, you can get around 400Mbps downloads.
And, the costs are now pretty comparable to fixed line NBN.
Fixed Wireless Plus, which ranges between 50Mbps and 400Mbps downloads, cost anywhere between $85/mth and $105/mth, without any discounts included.
That’s just about the same standard pricing as an NBN 50 plan or an NBN 250 plan on standard fibre.
It isn’t all good news. Upload speeds and latency can still be a little bit touch and go compared to fixed line NBN. But hey, a win is a win.
How we choose the best Fixed Wireless NBN plans each month
At the start of every month, our team of experts pick the best Fixed Wireless NBN plans by analysing any changes in our database, considering factors like 12-month costs, features and perks, typical evening speeds, and support channels. In terms of support, we consider the breadth of support options available to customers, coupled with feedback from customer review aggregators. Due to the scope of telcos we track, we have not personally tested support services for each provider.
We make three picks each, across three different speeds: Plans up to 100Mbps, plans up to 250Mbps, and plans up to 25Mbps. Only plans with unlimited data are considered.
For each category, we still favour plans that are competitively priced and offer perks. For starters, discounted limited-time promotional pricing tends to separate a winner from runners-up, which is what we use to calculate value in terms of first-year pricing. We also consider perks and other plan features when picking our monthly winners.
There are dozens of Fixed Wireless NBN plans in our comparison engine, and the WhistleOut team is responsible for tracking more than a thousand broadband and mobile plans with hundreds of changes each month in our database.
Fixed Wireless NBN FAQs
How does Fixed Wireless NBN work?
The easiest way to think of NBN's Fixed Wireless technology is similar to a mobile phone network. You're effectively getting online via 4G and 5G, just like your phone. Fixed Wireless NBN operates on different frequencies, and you need powerful antennas mounted on your roof for a good signal, but the basic principle of internet over wireless radio frequencies is the same.
What equipment do you need for a Fixed Wireless NBN plan?
Fixed Wireless NBN requires an antenna on your roof, an NBN Connection Box, and a router. The first two are supplied by NBN Co, but you'll need to buy your own router. Your internet service provider can supply a router if you don't own one.
An NBN technician will install the antenna, which is pointed towards the nearest Transmission Tower. The NBN Connection Box lives in your house, and is connected to the antenna and your router. The router creates a WiFi signal for oyur house.
If you order a faster Fixed Wireless plan, there is a chance you may need an antenna upgrade. This will be provided automatically when you order an eligible plan.
How fast are Fixed Wireless NBN plans?
If you're on a Fixed Wireless NBN connection, you'll be able to get download speeds of up to 400Mbps and upload speeds of up to 40Mbps.
Your actual speeds are dependent on the NBN plan you subscribe to, and can also be affected by factors like congestion during peak hours, your provider, and obstacles between your home and the NBN transmission tower (such as trees, and metal objects like colourbond roofs and steel sheds).
The five types of Fixed Wireless NBN plans you're currently able to pick from are as follows:
| Speed tier | Max download speed | Max upload speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 (Basic I) | 12Mbps | 1Mbps | 1 user |
| NBN 25 (Basic II) | 25Mbps | 5Mbps | 1-2 users |
| Fixed Wireless Plus | 100Mbps | 20Mbps | 2-4 users |
| Fixed Wireless Fast | 250Mbps | 20Mbps | 3-5 users |
| Fixed Wireless Superfast | 400Mbps | 40Mbps | 4-6 users |
Fixed Wireless NBN plans are more prone to congestion than fixed-line NBN plans, and as such, many providers prefer not to make evening speed guarantees. Congestion is more prominent on Fixed Wireless NBN plans as mobile networks have less capacity than a physical connection to the NBN.

When a plan wins the golden Editor's Pick ribbon, it means that as well as being the best plan for this month, the provider has gone into the running for our WhistleOut Awards, judged annually.
Our Editor's Picks are selected by our team of data experts. We may earn a commission if you click on one of the products listed, but a service provider isn't required to have a commercial relationship with us to be eligible for consideration. See here for more information about how we work.
WhistleOut is Australia's telco comparison website, founded to help everyday Aussies find a phone and internet plan that's right for them. As part of our service promise, we're committed to listing plans from at least the top ten providers of NBN plans in the market, but we're currently tracking 35. When we have a commercial relationship with a provider, you'll see a "Go To Site" button that takes you straight to that plan.
We still compare plans from providers we don't have a commercial relationship with, but these don't have a button. To keep our listings up to date, we have a dedicated product team that makes around 400 changes to our database each month.
