As part of an annual pricing review, NBN Co is increasing the price of wholesale residential NBN plans from July 1.
Most NBN speed tiers are increasing by less than $2, but it's worth keeping in mind that this is the wholesale price that NBN Co charges internet providers, who will then mark up the price (factoring in everything it takes to run a business).
Here's what the wholesale price changes look like this year:
| Wholesale NBN plan | Old price | New price | Price increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 Basic Bundle | $12.01 | $12.01 | No change |
| NBN 12 | $32.57 | $33.47 | $0.90 |
| NBN 25 | $33.96 | $34.64 | $0.68 |
| NBN 50 | $53.59 | $55.19 | $1.60 |
| NBN 100/20 | $57.22 | $58.53 | $1.31 |
| NBN 100/40 | $60.22 | $61.53 | $1.31 |
| NBN 250 | $62.22 | $63.93 | $1.71 |
| NBN 1000 | $72.22 | $73.93 | $1.71 |
As mandated by the Special Access Undertaking agreement accepted by the ACCC back in 2023, the NBN Co can only increase wholesale plan prices in line with the change in the annual consumer price index (CPI). In the 12 months to December 2024, the CPI rose 2.4%. In aggregate, the average wholesale NBN plan increase is 2.17%.
The biggest increase is to NBN 50 plans, which is still the most popular NBN speed tier with Australians. In percentage terms, the wholesale price is increasing by 2.99%.
NBN 12, NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans increase by the most next with a 2.76%, 2.75% and 2.37% increase respectively.
NBN 100/20 and NBN 100/40 trail behind with 2.29% and 2.18% increases. NBN 25 has the smallest increase at $0.68, or 2%.
Finally, NBN 12's Basic Bundle sees no increase and maintains its current wholesale price – this plan is designed for the lightest of internet users who would like a home phone line.
NBN price increases from internet providers
Some NBN providers will have already notified customers of the upcoming changes. We're updating this guide as we hear
about price updates from the major players.
This so far includes Telstra, Tangerine, Belong, Optus, Vodafone,
Aussie Broadband, Origin and Buddy.
Telstra NBN price changes
Telstra is increasing prices on most of its NBN plans on July 1. Its NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans, however, will become cheaper for both new and existing customers.
| NBN plan | Old price (per month) | New price (per month) | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $89 | $93 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 | $105 | $109 | $4 increase |
| NBN 100 | $110 | $113 | $3 increase |
| NBN 250 | $130 | $129 | $1 decrease |
| NBN 1000 | $150 | $139 | $11 decrease |
Both of Telstra's cheapest plans, NBN 25 and NBN 50, will see a $4 increase. Its NBN 100 plan will go up by $3 per month.
Compared to the wholesale price increases, Telstra's NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans are increasing by over twice as much. As is the NBN 100 plan, although as a percentage increase (2.72%) is much closer to the wholesale change of 2.29%.
Obviously, the real winners are those on the NBN 1000 plan (and to a lesser degree the 250 plan), with customers paying 7% less per month.
Optus NBN price increases
Optus is delaying its NBN price increases until July 7. But they only apply to two plans, its NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans, which will both go up by $4 per month.
The Entertainer version of its NBN 50 plan, which includes a Netflix Standard subscription, won't increase in price.
| NBN plan | Old price (per month) | New price (per month) | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $75 | $79 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 | $89 | $93 | $4 increase |
Optus' two price increases are in line with Telstra's, although it's not offering any decrease on NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans. Again, these increases are well over double NBN Co's wholesale price increase.
Aussie Broadband NBN price changes
Aussie Broadband is increasing the price of its NBN 12, NBN 50 and NBN 100/40 plans by $4 each from July 1.
This means the vast majority of Aussie's plans, including its NBN Pro plans will remain at their current prices.
| NBN plan | Old price (per month) | New price (per month) | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 | $69 | $73 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 | $89 | $93 | $4 increase |
| NBN 100/40 | $105 | $109 | $4 increase |
Aussie's $4 increase on NBN 50 plan is similar to other major providers. Whereas most NBN 12 customers are dodging a price rise from other providers Aussie's will see a nearly 6% increase.
Interestingly, not accounting for any discounts after July 1, there'll be just a $2 difference in price between Aussie's NBN 50 and NBN 100/20 plan, making the latter much better value.
Buddy Telco NBN price changes
Aussie's budget brand Buddy Telco is bucking the trend, announcing it won't pass on NBN wholesale price changes to customers. You can see Buddy Telcos' NBN plans here:
Tangerine NBN price changes
Tangerine was one of the first providers to announce its annual price changes. It has increased the price of its NBN 25, NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans and dropped the price of its NBN 1000 plan.
| NBN plan | Old price (per month) | New price (per month) | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $67.90 | $69.90 | $2 increase |
| NBN 50 | $82.90 | $84.90 | $2 increase |
| NBN 100/20 | $85.90 | $88.90 | $3 increase |
| NBN 100/40 | $89.90 | $92.90 | $3 increase |
| NBN 1000 | $124.90 | $119.90 | $5 decrease |
Note: This is the base cost, not including any introductory discounts.
Compared to most major providers, Tangerine's NBN 25 and NBN 50 plan increases are more modest at just $2 per month. The NBN 25 plan increase is still higher than the wholesale change, but as a percentage, its NBN 50 plan bucks the trend – changing by 2.41%. That's less than the wholesale increase of 2.99%.
Like Telstra, Tangerine is lowering the price of its NBN 1000 plan. Tangerine customers will pay 4% less than they previously did.
Belong NBN price changes
Belong is another provider that has announced modest price changes. Only NBN 25 and NBN 50 plan customers have been stung.
| NBN plan | Old price (per month) | New price (per month) | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $70 | $72 | $2 increase |
| NBN 50 | $85 | $88 | $3 increase |
While not drastic in dollar terms, as a percentage, Belong's price increases are still above the equivalent wholesale price increase.
Origin NBN price changes
Origin has also recently announced price changes. All of its NBN plans will increase in price.
| NBN plan | Old price (per month) | New price (per month) | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $83 | $89 | $6 increase |
| NBN 50 | $95 | $103 | $8 increase |
| NBN 100/20 | $105 | $107 | $2 increase |
| NBN 100/40 | $110 | $119 | $9 increase |
| NBN 250 | $120 | $129 | $9 increase |
| NBN 1000 | $130 | $139 | $9 increase |
The biggest impact is on Origin's fastest NBN plans, which will go up $9 per month. This is well above what other telcos are doing. For example, the NBN 1000 plan will see around a 8% increase compared to an almost 3% increase on the wholesale price.
You can still find a decent NBN deal
NBN Co's wholesale changes don't officially kick in until July 1, which means other NBN providers still have plenty of time to update their prices. If your provider hasn't let you know of any forthcoming price change, keep an eye out for your inbox or check your communications preferences to make sure you don't miss out on any important updates.
While we can't guarantee that any of the below plans won't see an eventual July 1 price rise, you can still save in the long run by switching to a cheaper NBN plan.
When will the next NBN price rise be?
Generally, NBN wholesale prices go up once per year. The annual increase is based on conditions outlined in the Special Access Undertaking (SAU), which is currently in place until 2040. The SAU outlines that the price increase can't be higher than the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which itself is a measure of how the cost of goods and services across everyday categories increase or decrease over time.
There may be another sort of one-off price rise in the near-term future. NBN Co is introducing faster speeds to select speed tiers in September this year. While NBN Co says it won't change wholesale prices, essentially making the speed increase available to telcos "for free" it will mean telcos need to invest in better equipment and changes to their setup to facilitate the speeds. This is likely to impact retail prices, but we don't know what that will look like exactly just yet.
5G home internet can be a fast and often cheaper alternative to the NBN. Here are some 5G home internet plans with maximum download speeds of 100Mbps, the same as an NBN 100 plan:
