Approximately 25,000 additional Fibre to the Node (FTTN) homes and businesses will have the option to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) by 2030, NBN Co has announced.
These premises are part of the current tranche of FTTN upgrades, which will see every premise left in the footprint given the opportunity to upgrade. Originally, 95% of the remaining 622,000 FTTN addresses were going to be upgraded to FTTP, but this has now risen to 99%.
FTTP is widely considered the best NBN technology type, thanks to its faster speeds and increased reliability. While many FTTN connections can't even manage NBN 100 speeds, all FTTP connections can score gigabit NBN plans like NBN 1000 and NBN 2000.
"Fibre is the foundation for a more connected and resilient Australia," said NBN Co COO Dion Ljubanovic.
"It delivers the dependable, high-capacity broadband people can count on—helping families, businesses and communities stay connected, productive and able to thrive in today’s digital world."
An NBN Co spokesperson told WhistleOut the remaining 1% of FTTN premises will be upgraded to either Fixed Wireless or NBN Co's upcoming Starlink-esque LEO satellite service.
"These locations are generally among the most remote and geographically challenging in Australia, such as isolated rural properties and premises in difficult terrain, where deploying fibre would require very significant investment for a small number of customers," said the spokesperson.
"Our objective remains to provide the best technology solution for each location, balancing performance, reliability and value for taxpayers."
These are the most popular NBN plans with speeds of 50Mbps or higher:
