Approximately 3,000 Telstra customers on the Opticomm network have had their personal information leaked on a hacking forum. While the the hacker claims the data set contains over 47,000 Opticomm customers, WhistleOut understands that the vast majority of these records are dummy data, and as such, useless.

A Telstra spokesperson confirmed to WhistleOut that its customers were impacted by the breach.

"We’re aware the data file released includes a combination of customer names, email addresses and phone numbers of approximately 3,000 Telstra customers on the Opticomm network," said the Telstra spokesperson.

"We are in the process of contacting all impacted customers and offering them support from IDCare, Australia’s national identity and cybersecurity community support service. We are working closely with Opticomm to investigate how the data was accessed and to notify the relevant authorities."

This data was allegedly obtained between late 2023 and early 2024.

In the forum post, the hacker stated the data came directly from Opticomm. In a statement, Opticomm said it is aware that certain information related to services supplied by it has been published, but that its operating and business systems were not compromised.

The company says the information published only relates to customers from a single internet provider that it supplies services to, which we now know was Telstra.

"Opticomm is continuing to assist the [provider] to investigate the breach and take appropriate actions," said the company.

Opticomm is a fixed-line internet wholesaler that competes with the NBN. Major providers including Telstra, Aussie Broadband, Exetel, iiNet, iPrimus, Launtel, Leaptel, Origin Internet, Superloop, and Swoop sell Opticomm internet plans in addition to NBN plans. There are also a large number of smaller internet providers that offer Opticomm plans.

Earlier in the day, Aussie Broadband, Superloop, and Exetel spokespeople confirmed their customers were not affected by the breach.
