Vodafone has upgraded the modems it sells with NBN and 5G home internet plans with WiFi 7 connectivity and a bundled mesh WiFi extender at no extra cost. Customers who sign up to a Vodafone internet plan get both the new "Super Wi-Fi Modem" and "Super Wi-Fi Mesh" extenders for $0 upfront.
While other major internet providers, including Telstra and Optus, have offered WiFi extenders for their in-house modems, these have typically cost extra. In some cases, this has been an extra upfront payment, or in others, an increased monthly fee.
While both Vodafone's new NBN and 5G modems share the same "Super Wi-Fi" branding, they're slightly different devices. Both have dual-band WiFi 7 support, which should allow wireless network speeds as fast as 3.6Gbps, use the same new "My Internet Connect" companion app, and support up to 100 simultaneous devices.
The NBN modem is naturally designed for fixed-line connections, however, and has no mobile network connectivity. This means the Super Wi-Fi Modem no longer has native 4G backup, unlike past modems offered by Vodafone. It has a 2.5Gbps WAN port, making it fast enough to support NBN 2000 plans when they launch as part of the September speed upgrades.
Meanwhile, the 5G modem swaps out VoIP and FTTN ports for a SIM card slot to facilitate mobile connectivity.
Both Super Wi-Fi Modem options work with the same mesh extenders.
While the Super Wi-Fi Modem costs $0 upfront, there are caveats if you leave within a certain time frame. On Vodafone NBN plans, if you leave within 24 months, you'll pay $14 for each month left in the two-year term. On 5G plans, if you leave within 36 months, you'll pay $11 for each month left in the three-year term. Alternatively, you can return the modem.
The mesh extender attracts a separate fee if you leave early. Customers will pay $6 per month left in their 24-month term on an NBN plan, and $4 per month left in their 36-month term on a 5G home internet plan.

The new Super Wi-Fi Modems are being rolled out across all of TPG's internet brands. TPG and iiNet are both already offering the 5G variant with their 5G home internet plans, and iiNet has the NBN variant too. TPG will start offering the NBN variant early next year. TPG and iiNet are currently not offering the mesh extenders, however.
