Are your Optus speed test results not what you expected? The internet speeds you should expect on your Optus plan will depend on what kind of connection you have. ADSL speeds will naturally be slower than NBN, for example.
When it comes to ADSL, the primary factor that affects your internet speed is your distance from your local telephone exchange. The longer the length of copper connecting your home or business to your exchange, the more speed you lose.
Optus cable speeds tend to be more consistent. A standard Optus cable plan has a maximum speed of 50Mbps, but you can pay $30 per more month for a boost to 100Mbps.
NBN connections are the most susceptible to speed variance: there's a whole range range of factors that can affect the speed of your NBN. These include the distance of your home from the Node (if you have a Fibre to the Node connection), congestion on the network and the condition/capabilities of your modem router and other home equipment.
If you're on an Optus NBN plan and the speeds reported by our test don't bear any similarity to the speeds discussed above, contact Optus to discuss possible solutions.
It's important to note that there are many possible causes for sub-standard NBN speeds. Some connections using Fibre to the Node technology cannot achieve typical speeds offered by plans during to physical limitations of the connection. If you are on a Fixed Wireless NBN connection, you will also be limited in the speed of plan you can choose. For other causes, see our troubleshooting guide on why your NBN is slow for more information. See our guide if you want to read about other internet providers or use our plan comparison tool to change your internet plan. Or if you prefer to ditch the National Broadband Network altogether, see our guide on NBN alternatives.
