You might think of JB Hi-Fi as a place where you go to buy an iPhone, Android phone, or a ton of other gadgets and gear, but there are also JB Hi-Fi Mobile plans that operate on the Telstra mobile network.
There are dozens of smaller mobile providers in Australia, all operating on either the Optus, Vodafone, or Telstra networks. Most Telstra providers don't get full access to the Telstra network. Instead, they operate over the much smaller Telstra "Wholesale" network. If you want full Telstra coverage, your only other option is Boost Mobile. And, sort of, JB Hi-Fi.
That's a solid start, but are JB Hi-Fi Mobile plans actually any good?
JB Hi-Fi Mobile plans explained
Unlike other telco brands that use the Telstra network, JB Hi-Fi isn't actually a mobile provider in its own right. At the end of the day, JB-Hi Fi sells custom Telstra mobile plans under its own brand name, but your actual mobile provider will be Telstra itself.
If you sign up for a JB Hi-Fi Mobile plan, your bill will come from Telstra. If you look at the critical information summary for JB Hi-Fi Mobile plans, you'll be redirected to a Telstra website for the relevant plan information. And the cost? Well, that's pretty close to Telstra pricing, too.
But where other Telstra providers are restricted to the Wholesale network, this hand-off at least means JB mobile plans have that full Telstra coverage to go with their Telstra price tag. Here's a quick look at how the Wholesale network looks versus full Telstra coverage:

JB Hi-Fi Mobile plans are available as either Upfront SIM-Only or prepaid, each with their own inclusions and drawbacks. Some of the Upfront plans in particular come with a 24-month contract, which is very rare in today's market. And all JB mobile plans are BYO handset.
JB Hi-Fi Mobile's 24-month contract plans generally come with large gift cards for us in JB stores. These gift cards can be in the hundreds of dollars, but the specific amount is prone to change, so it's hard to use them when directly comparing JB's mobile plans with other options.
The gift cards are ostensibly intended to put towards a new phone, but they're not restricted to any specific purchase – they're just standard JB Hi-Fi gift cards.
JB Hi-Fi Upfront plans compared
JB Hi-Fi Mobile is one of the few places you can still find a lock-in contract for a SIM-only plan. Of its three Upfront plans, two have a 24-month term. And remember, these contracts aren't with JB Hi-Fi – they're with Telstra.
The 24-month contract plans generally come with large JB Hi-Fi gift cards. These gift cards can be in the hundreds of dollars (or even above $1,000), but the specific amount is prone to change, making it hard to account for them when directly comparing JB's mobile plans with other options. The gift cards are ostensibly intended to put towards a new phone, but they're not restricted to any specific purchase – they're just standard JB Hi-Fi gift cards.
However, there are some eligibility criteria. For example, you won't get a gift card if you're porting your number from a plan with Telstra, Boost Mobile, or The Good Guys (which has a similar set up to JB Hi-Fi's mobile plans). You can find the full terms on Telstra's website.
All three JB mobile Upfront plans have 5G access, unlimited SMS and MMS to standard international numbers, and data sharing with other JB Hi-Fi Upfront mobile services on the same account. And all three use a similar Day Pass international roaming system to Telstra.
Like Telstra Upfront plans, if you use up your data cap, speeds are slowed to 1.5Mbps for the duration of your billing cycle instead of being charged extra. Another point in JB's favour here is its coverage. Telstra is the only other brand that sells postpaid-style plans with full access to its network (Boost Mobile is strictly a prepaid provider). So every other competitor on the Telstra network is limited to Telstra Wholesale coverage.
JB Hi-Fi Mobile's Upfront plans don't have any of the following:
- Calls to standard international numbers (without an add-on)
- SMS or calls to premium numbers (like 19XX numbers)
- Calls to some satellite numbers
- Earning Telstra Plus points
- Access to the Telstra Loyalty program
- Telstra Satellite Messaging
JB's cheapest Upfront plan is contract-free. It's $64 per month for a big 60GB of data, which is more than double what the average postpaid user goes through in a month. It's also on the pricey side compared to other providers in our database with around this much data. It's also capped at 150Mbps speeds, but that's still far faster than most people need.
For comparison, here's a look at the cheapest SIM-only (postpaid and upfront) plans in our database with at least 50GB of monthly, limited to one result per provider:
The next cheapest option is the Everyday 24-month plan with its huge 150GB per month data cap. It starts at $69 per month for the first contract term, after which the current pricing increases to $79 per month. But at least that increase doesn't happen while you're locked in.
Compared to similar plans in our database, it's the same story as the Starter plan, with cheaper options across networks. This includes better deals on the Telstra Wholesale network, none of which have lock-in contracts. Here's a list of plans from our database that start with at least 150GB of monthly data:
Last on the list is the Premium 24-month plan, which is $99 per month for a whopping 300GB. This is about 15 times the national average usage for postpaid plans.
While not too many providers offer plans with this much data, it still doesn't compare well to other options in our database. And as before, remember JB's plan comes with a 24-month contract.
Here's a look at other providers from our database with plans starting with at least 300GB:

JB Hi-Fi prepaid plans compared
There's only one choice of prepaid plan with JB Hi-Fi: the $39 JB Hi-Fi Mobile Pre-Paid SIM. It comes with 30GB of data, unlimited talk and text to standard Aussie numbers, and 150Mbps capped 4G and 5G speeds. There's also 200GB of data rollover if you recharge ahead of the 30-day expiry.
While JB Hi-Fi's Mobile plans do access the full Telstra network, JB's prepaid plan shares one small limitation with Telstra's own prepaid offerings. That is, no access to Telstra "5G standalone" sites.
A very small selection of Telstra's full 5G network uses 5G SA technology, as opposed to the much more common 5G non-standalone (5G NSA). You're unlikely to notice the difference, but there might be the odd occasion where you're in a 5G SA area that doesn't have overlapping 5G NSA. In these instances, you'd fall back to Telstra 4G, if it's available.
As for extras, the JB Hi-Fi prepaid plan has 100 SMS and MMS to any country, plus 300 call minutes to Zone 1 destinations: India, China. New Zealand, UK, USA, U.S Virgin Islands, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand.
The JB Hi-Fi Pre-Paid SIM doesn't have any of the following:
- Premium calls and texts
- Premium services and content purchasing
- Earning Telstra Plus points
- International roaming (without add-ons)
- 5G Standalone access
As is the trend on this page, compared to prepaid plans in our database with at least 30GB, the JB Hi-Fi Mobile Pre-Paid SIM doesn't offer the best value, especially if you look across all three mobile networks.
That said, it's more competitively priced if you stick to just the full Telstra network. Here's a quick look at the cheapest prepaid plans with at least 30GB from Boost Mobile and Telstra – the only other two other options if you want full Telstra network access.
For extra comparison, here's a look at prepaid mobile plans from our database with at least 30GB of data:
Prepaid add-ons
For prepaid users, JB Hi-Fi offers data and international add-ons. All add-ons are accessed via the JB Hi-Fi Mobile app in the "Services" tab, then under "Extras". If you want more data, it's either $5 for 1GB (seven-day expiry) or $20 for 4GB (30-day expiry).
To call other countries from Australia, JB Hi-Fi offers a prepaid International Calling pack for $10 (with a 30-day expiry). It has 100 SMS and MMS to all countries, plus 300 international direct dial (IDD) call minutes to the same 16 Telstra Zone 1 destinations outlined in the prepaid section above.
JB Hi-Fi also offers three prepaid International Roaming Day Passes.
- $10 Day Pass (three-day expiry): 400MB of data, 15 minutes of calls, plus 15 SMS and MMS
- $15 Day Pass (seven-day expiry): 2GB of data, 25 minutes of calls, plus 25 SMS and MMS
- $25 Day Pass (14-day expiry): 4GB of data, 50 minutes of calls, plus 50 SMS and MMS
FAQs about JB Hi-Fi Mobile plans
How do I get a JB Gift Card with a JB mobile plan?
To get a JB Gift Card, you need to purchase either the Everyday or Premium plan, both of which have 24-month contracts. The gift card is available to port-in services, and possibly also for new customers, depending on the plan (check the fine print). You may be ineligible if you're porting in from another JB Hi-Fi plan, The Good Guys Mobile, Telstra, or Boost Mobile. Note that if you cancel your plan or shift to another one, you may have to pay a pro rata Voucher Repayment Fee.
Can I cancel a JB Hi-Fi Mobile plan?
Yes, you can cancel a JB Hi-Fi Upfront mobile plan at any time. The service will be disconnected immediately without any refunds. You may also have to pay a "Voucher Repayment Fee" if you bought a JB Hi-Fi Everyday or Premium plan.
Can Telstra change my JB Hi-Fi Mobile plan without asking?
Yes, Telstra can change your JB Hi-Fi Mobile plan, but you should receive at least 30 days' notice. If you don't like the proposed plan change, you'll need to change mobile providers.
