Mobile Provider Of The Year

iiNet is WhistleOut's Mobile Provider of the Year, and while iiNet might be best known for its internet offering, it's also an excellent choice for mobile plans. If you're looking for an affordable mobile plan iiNet offers great value if you're after a no-frills option, even when you ignore the deep discounts it tends to offer new customers.

Best SIM-Only Provider, Value Plans

Queensland based Moose Mobile has gone back-to-back winning the Best SIM Only Provider, Value Plans award again this year. The budget MVNO runs on the Optus network and prides itself on low costs and great customer service. This is something Moose Mobile has delivered in spades over both the last 12 and 24 months.
Runner Up:Dodo

Best Prepaid Provider, Value Plans

Coles Mobile positions its plans towards the budget conscious user, with a set of prepaid plans that offer plenty of bang for your buck. Runner Up:TPG

Best Prepaid Provider, Large Plans

Some people might know TPG best for its cheap internet plans, but it's also a great option if you're in the market for a prepaid plan. This year has seen a particular return to form for TPG with it no-frills prepaid offerings, winning the Best Prepaid Provider, Large Plans award again, like it did in 2018 and 2019.

2022 Mobile Phone Winners

Phone Of The Year
Apple iPhone 13
If you're looking for a new handset, the iPhone 13 is the best choice for most.
While the iPhone 13 might not be a “Pro” model, it strikes an excellent balance between price and performance, offering up a zippy processor, excellent camera, and a reliable battery. It makes very few compromises for its $1,349 price point.
While that's still on the pricier side for a phone, the extensive support Apple provides for its smartphones helps balance this out. History suggests we can expect around seven years of major operating system upgrades for the iPhone 13. Most Android flagship phones tend to max out at three years.
Even if you're not keeping your iPhone 13 for that long, the longer support life should help keep its resale value down the line.
It's for these reasons and more we've named the iPhone 13 our phone of the year. It's an excellent all-round device that's easy to recommend.

Best Camera Phone

Until Apple announced the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, the iPhone 12 Pro Max was the best camera phone you could buy. And almost a full year later, the iPhone 13 Pro siblings are still holding onto that crown.
The pair have the fastest primary lens on a phone, giving you the best possible chance of not missing a moment. There's a smaller risk of blur in low light, with phones snapping far quicker than rival phones. And the all new macro mode allows for stunning images.
It's for these reasons and more we've crowned the iPhone 13 Pro family the best camera phone.
Runner Up:OPPO Find X5 Pro

Best Phone Design

You can't buy the OPPO Find N in Australia, but it's a fascinating enough device that we've still crowned it the best designed phone of the year.
The Find N is easily the most refined foldable phone to date, addressing the biggest design issues with the form factor. Unlike all other foldables, the Find N doesn't have a noticeable crease. At some angles you can see it if you're looking for it, but it's the most seamless display we've seen in this new category of phone.
In addition, you can barely feel the crease when you move your hands across the screen, solving another pain point with early devices.
Our favourite thing about the Find N, however, is the size. When folded, the external display is just 5.49-inches and uses a traditional aspect ratio. This makes it feel a lot more like using a regular phone, and means you get a great experience whether the Find N is open or closed.
Even if you can't currently get your hands on an OPPO foldable in Australia, we're hoping that the Find N's innovations help push the entire category forward.
Runner Up:Galaxy Z Flip 3

Best Value Phone

With the Edge 20 Fusion, Motorola managed to cram a whole lot of impressive hardware into an affordable package. At launch, $499 bought you a sizeable 6.7"-display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a chunky 5,000mAh battery, and the same 108MP camera we saw in the Galaxy S20 Ultra the year prior.
Quantity doesn't always mean quality, but we found the Edge 20 Fusion to deliver smooth performance, reliable battery life, and a big improvement in camera when compared to previous Motorola phones.
It's for these reasons we've named the Motorola Edge 20 Fusion our best value phone.
Runner Up:iPhone SE (2022)

Best High Performance Phone

If you're after a phone that doesn't make any compromises, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is as close as you'll get.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max set the bar pretty high, but Apple nonetheless managed to push battery life and camera quality even further with the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Even with 5G enabled, the iPhone 13 Pro Max can almost last two days, and almost a year later, no Android flagship phone has bested its camera.
When you also factor in the fastest mobile processor, a gorgeous OLED display, and the strength of the iOS ecosystem, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is hard to beat. It's got everything but the kitchen sink.
Runner Up:Pixel 6 Pro

Phone Manufacturer of the Year

The phone industry has reached the point of maturity where new iterations are less exciting than they used to be, and honestly, this has been a mostly boring year for phones.
Boring doesn't have to be bad, however. Apple's recent slate of iPhones may have been incremental, but they were incremental in the right ways. Batteries were upgraded across the entire portfolio, cameras got better, and screens got brighter. And hey, the iPhone 13 finally starts with 128GB of storage.
Apple's focus and leadership when it comes to core functionality is the key reason we've awarded it manufacturer of the year.
About the Awards
About the Awards The WhistleOut Awards recognise the telco businesses that have consistently provided Australians with the best plans over the last year. The awards also highlight the best promotions and phone products released during that period.
WhistleOut’s mission is to help Australians find better phones and internet, and make better telco decisions. We know it can be a complicated and confusing industry with so many providers, plans and products that it’s easy to get lost and difficult to know who to trust.
That’s where the WhistleOut Awards come in. They aim to cover the different types of phone and internet use cases that apply to most Australians, and show which providers have most consistently offered the best plans over 12 months (July-June). The awards also acknowledge the best phones that have been brought onto the market over the year, and provide a great starting point for anyone looking to make a smart telco change.
Judging Criteria
The WhistleOut Awards are aimed at finding the best providers for different phone and internet needs on a national level.
We have reviewed the biggest cross section of providers possible, including the top 10 service providers in each category, many smaller providers, and the full range of phone manufacturers available in Australia. The top ten service providers typically cover 80% or more of Australia’s phone and internet plans.
The WhistleOut Award categories for phone and internet plans are judged by awarding 3, 2 and 1 points to the providers of the three best plans in each category on a monthly basis, (July 2021 - June 2022). The award winners are the providers with the highest number of points at the end of the 12 month period. In case of a tie, winners are chosen based on the number of 1st positions, then 2nd positions, then 3rd positions they achieved in that category over the course of the year. A provider can receive points for multiple plans in a category if their plans best match the award criteria.
The exceptions to this judging process are the Best Promotion and Sustainable Provider awards for Mobile and Internet. The Best Promotion awards are given to the single best promotion over the twelve month period as judged by WhistleOut’s in-house panel of experts. The Sustainable Provider awards are entered by written submission and assessed by WhistleOut's in-house panel.
The WhistleOut phone awards are judged by our team of editorial experts who have reviewed the majority of new phones brought out over the last 12 months. Key judging considerations include price, performance, battery, screen, camera, design and the overall user experience.
