Google today released the first beta of Android 11, the next version of its mobile operating system, as well as detailing some key new features. Core new functionality in Android 11 will revolve around conversations, smart home devices, and privacy. Here's a look at what's new.
Conversation focused notifications
Most of us use our phones to communicate with one another, and Android 11 is making a few tweaks to reflect that. All conversations notifications across a plethora of apps will now be grouped in their own dedicated section in the notification section. Conversations can also be marked as priority, which will let them through break Do Not Disturb if you have it switched on.
Android 11 is also taking inspirations from Facebook Messenger's Chat Heads, with Bubbles. Bubbles, like Chat Heads, let you open up a conversation on top of whatever app you've got running, without having to switch entirely.
Integrated smart home functionality
Android 11 bakes smart home control directly into the operating system; you won't need to open a dedicated app to turn on a light or tinker with any other smart home appliance in your home. Instead, long pressing the power button will let you access controls for any compatible device you own. This hub page will also show any credit cards you've enrolled in Google Play, boarding passes, and more.
Privacy improvements
When an app attempts to access your location, microphone, or camera, Android 11 will give you the option to grant permission as a one-off. If you provide one-off access, you'll then need to grant permission again next time you open the app. In Android 10, your choices are to allow access while using to the app, or to deny it altogether. Apple added similar functionality for location data in iOS 13.
When will Android 11 be available?
We're expecting Android 11 to in the third quarter of this year, at least for anyone with a Pixel 2 or newer. Other manufacturers will likely take longer to deploy Android 11 to their devices.
Pixel 2, Pixel 3, Pixel 3a, and Pixel 4 owners can try out a beta from today, but we'd suggest not installing it on your primary device. Google says the Android 11 beta will be coming to other devices in the coming weeks. OPPO has already confirmed the Find X2 Pro will be one of these devices.
