Boost Mobile has launched a long-expiry prepaid plan aimed at those looking for a longer-term commitment and access to the full Telstra network.
The provider’s new $180 prepaid SIM comes with 100GB of data, 4G and 5G coverage capped at speeds of 150Mbps, unlimited talk and text, unlimited standard calls to 20 selected destinations, 3,600 minutes of standard calls to 30 selected destinations, and 3,600 standard texts to any country.
In addition, those who opt to pick up the new prepaid SIM and activate it before August 10 will score an extra 60GB of data on their first recharge. That brings the usual data allowance up from 100GB to 160GB of data, which is pretty good value and the equivalent of paying $30 for approximately 26GB of data per month over a six-month period.
When plans have similar inclusions, the cheapest option isn’t always the best. One way to compare is on the value per GB. As a rule of thumb, anything at $1 or under per GB is good value.
Unfortunately, once you go back to the standard data allowance, this plan isn’t quite as competitive from a dollars-to-data perspective. After the first six months, it goes down to the equivalent of paying $30 for approximately 16GB of data per month over a six-month period.
If you signed up to a month-to-month plan from one of the Telstra network providers in the widget below and stuck with them for six months, you’d might end up paying less and getting more gigabytes overall.
Here’s a snapshot of what $30 per month gets you when it comes to Telstra MVNOs right now:

As a reminder, Boost Mobile is the only Telstra MVNO that uses the full Telstra network. This puts Boost coverage just ahead of other Telstra sub-brands on coverage. Here's a look at Boost Mobile's current 28-day expiry prepaid plans and how they compare against Telstra's own:
