Sennheiser's new flagship Momentum 5 Wireless headphones come with the usual spiel: better sound quality, upgraded noise cancelling, the works. The most interesting change, however, is a user-replaceable battery.
The audio manufacturer says users can replace the internal battery "in minutes" with just a Philips-head screwdriver. Batteries degrade over time, which results in shorter run times, so the fact the Momentum 5 Wireless are designed for repair should give them a longer lifespan - assuming nothing else gives out first. Sennheiser has yet to confirm how much a replaceable battery will cost, but it sells spare parts on its Australian website.
Replaceable batteries are a rarity in consumer-grade wireless earbuds and headphones. Google made some strides in this area with the Pixel Buds 2a, allowing users to swap the battery in the case themselves. Fender's Mix headphones also have a replaceable battery, but these aren't currently available in Australia. Otherwise, there has been much to report on in this area.
Replaceability aside, the Momentum 5 Wireless battery is said to offer up to 57 hours of battery life per charge with noise-cancelling on. Many flagship-grade wireless headphones max out at 30 hours, for comparison.
The Momentum Wireless 5 are available for pre-order from today ahead of a June 25 release date. They retail for $749, and come bundled with a case, USB-C charging cable, and a 3.5mm cable for wired use.
