TCL makes its own smartphones now

TV manufacturer TCL has been making smartphones under Alcatel's, BlackBerry's, and Palm's brands for a while now, but the company has started putting its own name on its handsets. The first is called the TCL Plex, and you can buy it locally from today for $499.

The TCL Plex is a fairly standard midrange phone, but it's packing pretty decent hardware for the asking price.

Key specifications for the TCL Plex include a 6.53-inch 1080p+ Snapdragon 675 processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, a 48MP + 16MP + 2MP rear-facing cameras, and a 3,820mAh battery.

One rather unique feature you won't find anywhere else is "Super Bluetooth". This allows up to four Bluetooth headphones or speakers to connect to the Plex simultaneously.

The TCL Plex is available from today through JB Hi-FI for $499 in a choice of "Obsidian Black" or "Opal White". The $499 price-tag means it will be going head-to-head with devices like the Realme XT, the Motorola One Vision and OPPO Reno Z. We'll certainly be keen to see how it stacks up.
