Telstra won't increase the price of its postpaid mobile plans in July this year, the telco announced via an ASX statement.
For the last few years, Telstra has increased its postpaid mobile phone plan prices in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in July. The CPI is the market indicator that measures the percentage change in the cost of goods and services year-on-year.
In the statement, CEO Vicki Brady said that the change aims to simplify Telstra's pricing strategy by bringing postpaid plans into line with other products.
"We will not be making a CPI-linked annual price change to postpaid mobile prices in July 2024," said Brady. "We will continue to review our pricing and any changes will be communicated to customers in a timely and transparent way."
The announcement doesn't necessarily rule out any increase at all this year, but means, for the time being, Telstra's Upfront postpaid SIM-only plans will continue to be priced as follows at least past July 1:
Last year's CPI-based increase saw Telstra's Upfront plans increase by $4 to $5 per month.
- Basic. Increased from $58 to $62 per month with an additional 10GB of data
- Essential. Increased from $68 to $72 per month, data inclusions remained the same
- Premium. Increased from $89 to $95 per month, data inclusions remained the same
Telstra has historically been transparent about the annual CPI increases. A snapshot from Internet Archive's Wayback Machine shows a notice that earlier in the month read "Price may increase annually in July by CPI".

This has since been changed to state "Plan prices may change".
Customers with Telstra MVNOs may see some bill relief as well. Last year operators on Telstra's network including Belong, Boost Mobile and Tangerine all increased their prices following Telstra's July 1 price increase.
The mobile plan announcement came at the same time as Brady was detailing the telco's decision to reduce its workforce by 2,800 staff.
