This year, the directing duo behind the Spider-Verse films - Phil Lord and Chris Miller - returned to live action for the first time since 2014's 22 Jump Street with a long-anticipated big screen adaptation of Project Hail Mary. The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi blockbuster was a box office success and a critical hit, despite concerns that the source material might be too difficult to adapt. Now, a few short months after its March release, Project Hail Mary is landing on Amazon Prime Video in Australia this weekend.
How to watch Project Hail Mary in Australia
You've got a couple of options for streaming Project Hail Mary in Australia. Firstly, it's available with an Amazon Prime Video subscription as of Friday, July 3. Amazon Prime Video costs $9.99 per month or $79 per year (saving $40.88), and it allows you to stream in up to 4K resolution on three devices at once. The basic plan does include ad-breaks, however. If you'd like to remove ads, you will need to pay an additional $2.99 per month.
Watch Project Hail Mary on Prime VideoUnless you sign up for an annual plan, Amazon Prime Video is month-to-month, so you're free to cancel whenever you like. With that said, there are other benefits to having a Prime Video subscription, like free or discounted shipping through Amazon and Prime Music (Amazon's version of Spotify), so if you can find a deal on it, there are plenty of perks that can save you money on other services.
If you'd prefer to pay once, you can rent Project Hail Mary for $6.99 or purchase it for $24.99 on digital services, like Apple TV and YouTube Movies. If physical media is more your style, Project Hail Mary will be getting a Blu-ray release in August.
What is Project Hail Mary about?
Adapted from Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name, Project Hail Mary transports us to the not-so-distant future in 2032, where a man named Ryland Grace (Gosling) awakens from an induced coma with a touch of amnesia with no idea how he ended up hurtling through space on the spacecraft known as Project Hail Mary. Through regular flashbacks, we discover how Grace, a molecular biologist turned high school reacher, became involved with a plot to save the world from "astrophage," a mysterious substance dimming the Sun fast enough to bring on cataclysmic globe cooling within 30 years.
Many fans considered everything else depicted in the original trailer to be veering into spoiler country, so that's where we'll wrap it up for now. Just know that if you liked The Martian (another Weir adaptation) or Lord and Miller's sense of humour and style, you're going to love Project Hail Mary.
