Sometimes it can feel like there's nothing to watch on Netflix. You stare at hundreds of movies and everything feels tired and familiar, like the algorithm's got you pegged. If that's happening to you it could be time for a shake-up, some new inspiration and a new way of sorting through the options.

It might be time for Netflix secret codes. These are numbers you can type into Netflix to unlock hidden genre categories.

The codes unlock familiar genres like westerns (7700), romantic comedies (5475) and spy thrillers (9147). But also unusual genres like campy movies (1252), Belgian movies (262) and deep sea horror (45028). And also really specific genres like coming of age dramas based on books (507), critically-acclaimed emotional movies from the 1980s (4466) or dark military historical documentaries (1607).

Secret Netflix codes can feel like a breath of fresh air to streaming veterans, and they're a great way for Netflix novices to get a sense of the scope available in the Netflix Australia catalogue.

What are the Netflix codes?

Netflix secret codes classify movies and TV by genres that range from the niche, to the descriptive, to the weirdly specific. There are over 27,000 in total - and we're guessing you don't want to wade through all of them. That's why we've made some lists of our top picks for Netflix Australia.

How do you use Netflix codes?

All you need is a Netflix code number, which you add to the end of this URL: http://www.netflix.com/browse/...

So for example, to browse Netflix film noir (7687) go to: http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/7687

These codes are designed for use in your web browser. If you want to use these via the Netflix app on your phone or tablet, you can click any of the links below and it will open up the respective genre page in the app.

Are you on the right broadband plan for Netflix?

Streaming is one of the most data intensive things you can do online, so it's important to consider what broadband provider you're with and what plan is best for you. If you're not careful, Netflix can make a serious dent in your monthly data allowance. But if you pick the right plan, you can binge endlessly without having to keep one eye on your broadband bill.

Netflix has three quality settings for when you're streaming in your web browser, on your smart TV, or on your game console. The data usage for these is as follows:

Low: 300MB per hour
Medium: 700MB per hour
High: 3GB per hour for HD, 7GB per hour for 4K

If you haven't adjusted these, there's a good chance that your quality is set to auto, which means you're streaming at the highest quality possible based on your device and internet connection. Many Australians will find Netflix opts for an HD stream.

If you're streaming on high (or auto), streaming a single feature length film on Netflix will use somewhere around 6GB. If you're streaming on a regular basis, we tend to recommend plans with at least 500GB as a minimum to ensure you've still got enough data left for everything else you want to do online.
