If you’re an English Premier League (EPL) fan in Australia, there’s a fair chance you’re already across the recent changes to the local streaming rights. But with the 2025 EPL season coming in hot, there are likely to be a huge number of punters still a little confused about how to stream the popular football league when it kicks off this Saturday.
Long story short, Optus Sport and Nine Entertainment came to an agreement earlier in the year that gave Stan Sport the streaming rights to the EPL, Emirates FA Cup, UEFA Women’s Euro and Women’s Soccer League.
So Stan Sport, not Optus Sport, will be the sole destination for streaming all 380 EPL matches in the 2025/2026 season. Select matches will also be available to watch on Channel 9, starting with Aston Villa v Newcastle, which will kick off at 9:30pm AEST on August 16.
Despite an overall higher minimum cost, Stan Sport is unequivocally a better home for the EPL. In addition to having more sports available overall, including various rugby leagues and tennis championships like Wimbledon, Stan Sport subscribers can also access the TV show and movie library that comes with a regular Stan subscription. More importantly, moving the EPL to Stan Sport means Australian viewers will finally be able to stream select matches in 4K.
Stan Sport costs a minimum of $32 per month. The Stan Sport add-on itself only costs $20 per month, but a standard Stan subscription is also required.
Here’s how Stan’s plans compare:
That’s straightforward for anyone who isn’t already a paying Optus Sport subscriber, but for those who are, things get a little complicated.
What if I’m already an Optus Sport customer?
Existing Optus Sport subscribers can transfer their subscription over to Stan Sport and continue paying their current rate throughout the next three EPL seasons. There’s one small catch, however. Customers migrated from Optus Sport’s SubHub deal will receive Stan Premium (valued at $22/mth) for free and continue to pay only $9.99 (or $24.99 for those who signed up to Optus Sport as a standalone service) per month until January 2026. After that, they will still receive Stan Sport (valued at $20 per month) for free over the next three years, but they will need to pay for at least Stan Basic ($12/mth) to keep their discounted Stan Sport subscription active.
Some simple math tells us that this arrangement will be no bueno for standalone Optus Sport subscribers after January 2026. The combination of the $24.99 per month Optus Sport fee, and the required $12 per month minimum for Stan Basic, would cost more than the cheapest Stan Sport subscription. Optus says it has emailed customers explaining the transition as it applies to their existing arrangement.
