Grand Theft Auto fans across the world are currently evading leaks and spoilers like they’ve got a five-star wanted level, but very soon, they’ll get their first legitimate extended look at what is guaranteed to be the biggest video game release in history.
Because it’s 2026, Netflix has found a way to get in on the monumental occasion. It will be offering subscribers an advanced preview of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look this week, before the special goes live on YouTube just a few hours later.
If you’re watching from Australia, only the most die-hard fans will need to pay for Netflix to watch the preview when it first releases. Because by the time most of us clock off from work Friday, it will already be available to stream for free on YouTube.
How (and when) to watch the extended GTA VI preview in Australia
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere exclusively on Netflix at 5:00 AM AEST on Friday, August 28. That will be an extremely short-lived exclusive, however, as the same preview will go live on YouTube and Rockstar’s website just six hours later at 11:00 AM AEST on the same day.

Only the truly devoted GTA VI fans will be paying for Netflix to watch what is essentially a glorified gameplay trailer. But if that’s your bag, you can grab Netflix Basic with Ads from $9.99 per month. Buyer beware: Netflix doesn’t offer a free trial like a lot of other streaming services, so the moment you sign up, that’s at least $9.99 wasted.
What else do we know about GTA VI: An Extended Look?
The first extended look at GTA VI will reportedly run between 20 and 30 minutes long, but recent leaks suggest it could even release in three “episodes,” totalling over an hour in gameplay footage.
The contents of the preview have possibly been spoiled already by leakers. To keep things vague for those avoidng spoilers, it’s said to include cinematics and gameplay involving a heist in addition to some of the busywork and minigames Rockstar fans know and love from previous titles.
Is your internet ready for GTA VI?
Grand Theft Auto VI officially releases on Thursday, November 19. It's available for pre-order now but whether you buy it digitally on PlayStation or Xbox, or physically through retailers like Big W, JB HI-FI or Amazon, the result is the same: you will still need to download the complete game on the day of release (or whenever pre-loading becomes available). That's because even the physical copies don't come with any data on a disc, rather a download code in a traditional game case.
Assuming the initial download and day one patches of GTA VI land somewhere between 100 and 200GB (though that could be a generous estimate), you could be in for a long wait if your internet connection isn't up to snuff.
Compare NBN download speeds and expected wait times below:
Having the wrong NBN speed tier could result in a 10+ hour wait for the game to download, and that's not accounting for any server bottlenecks on Xbox and PlayStation's end. If it's the most you can get, NBN 100 is the absolute minimum we would recommend, but if you're eligible for FTTP, going for NBN 500 or above will be your best bet if you're hoping to play GTA VI on release day. Either way, comparing your NBN options now could save you a long wait come November.
Here's a quick look at some of the most popular internet plans faster than NBN 100 in Australia:
What is Netflix?
As one of the OG platforms to kick off Australia's paid streaming boom in March 2015, Netflix saw subscribers sign up in droves. That massive demand helps explain why it sits at the pricier end of the market today—and why it still skips offering free trials or discounted annual plans. The platform has cemented its place as an Aussie household staple largely thanks to its massive slate of exclusive originals, including heavy-hitters like Stranger Things, The Witcher, Squid Game, Black Mirror, The Crown, You, The Umbrella Academy, and Wednesday.
How does Netflix compare?
Netflix remains one of the more expensive streaming platforms locally. While its entry-level ad tier starts at $9.99 per month, stepping up to an ad-free tier requires a hefty $11 jump.
Here's how that compares with other major streaming services in Australia:
