The best kind of internet connection is one that you never have to worry about dropping out. Having a reliable NBN connection is paramount nowadays, regardless of whether you’re looking to stream Netflix or work from home. Despite that, most providers aren’t as loud about reliability as they are other metrics like typical evening speeds
Fortunately, the ACCC can help. As part of its quarterly Measuring Broadband Australia reports, Australia’s competition watchdog provides a regular update on NBN performance across the nation. While the most significant figures disclosed in these reports tend to be things like speed and latency, there’s also plenty of useful data about how each provider rates when it comes to outages.
The short version here is that the ACCC tracks daily outages lasting for more than 30 seconds across the twelve providers it keeps tabs on as part of the report. This list adds up to twelve providers in total, including Aussie Broadband, Dodo, Exetel, iiNet, iPrimus, Leaptel, Optus, Superloop, Telstra, TPG, and Vodafone.
Of course, the most recent report only covers outages that took place during that quarter. To get a clearer picture of just how reliable each NBN provider is, we've taken the outage data from the past four reports and averaged it out.
NBN Outages Compared
| Provider | June 2025 | March 2025 | December 2024 | September 2024 | Average Outages Per Day |
| Superloop | 0.17 | 0.12 | 0.12 | 0.10 | 0.13 |
| iiNet | 0.24 | 0.16 | 0.09 | 0.14 | 0.16 |
| Vodafone | 0.12 | 0.18 | 0.16 | 0.21 | 0.17 |
| Launtel | 0.13 | 0.10 | 0.22 | 0.21 | 0.17 |
| Telstra | 0.11 | 0.07 | 0.05 | 0.59 | 0.21 |
| Aussie Broadband | 0.16 | 0.15 | 0.38 | 0.24 | 0.23 |
| Optus | 0.08 | 0.12 | 0.13 | 0.63 | 0.24 |
| Dodo | 0.19 | 0.11 | 0.35 | 0.34 | 0.25 |
| iPrimus | 0.19 | 0.11 | 0.35 | 0.35 | 0.25 |
| TPG | 0.32 | 0.18 | 0.17 | 0.57 | 0.31 |
| Exetel | 0.31 | 0.43 | 0.32 | 0.18 | 0.31 |
As you can see in the table above, Optus had the least number of average outages per day over the past quarter. This was followed by Telstra and Vodafone. TPG was the worst-performing. Meanwhile, Exetel saw the biggest improvement - though it still ranked towards the bottom of the list overall.
When it comes to average performance, the story is slightly different. Superloop, iiNet, Launtel and Vodafone were the strongest performers, with Telstra's poor performance in September 2024 holding it back from ranking any higher than fifth place.
Here's a selection of NBN plans from providers featured in the report:
The Measuring Broadband Australia report sample covers roughly 1,200 connections during each one-month testing period. The vast majority of the connections are also made up of the providers in the report. Although the sample here isn’t massive compared to the total amount that the NBN services, it's still a useful indicator of how an ISP should perform as the ACCC reports a 95% confidence level in its results.
How long do NBN outages last?
The typical length of an NBN outages can often feel as important as the frequency. Fortunately, during June’s tracking period, the ACCC said that only 45% of outages lasted no more than three minutes and that most households had fewer than one outage per day.
The graph below looks at outage length for the most recent quarter:

Most outages lasted between 30 seconds to 10 minutes, but Aussie Broadband and iiNet skewed toward the lengthier side. Conversely, Vodafone, TPG, and Optus had shorter outages.
