ACCC broadband performance report results: June 2024
The June Measuring Broadband Australia report has seen providers shuffle around in rankings. Telstra took out the top spot for the first time ever, booting Exetel to second. Optus maintained its third-place spot, while sibling telcos Dodo and iPrimus managed to stay in fourth. TPG climbed up to fifth, knocking out Launtel.
5 fastest NBN providers: How do they compare?
Now you know what speeds you can expect from the major NBN providers, how do their internet plans compare? Here's a selection of unlimited NBN plans from the five fastest providers covered by the ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia performance report. (Well, technically six, because Dodo and iPrimus tied.)
We've shown providers in order of peak hour speed performance. We've included plans with NBN 50 or NBN 100 speeds as a starting point, as they're available to most households.
An NBN 50 plan should be fast enough to service smaller households, while NBN 100 plans are best suited to households of four or more, those who regularly download or upload large files, or anyone with multiple connected devices at home.
We've also included NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans offered, but they're only available to those with FTTP or HFC NBN connections.
Before we go into more detail, here is how NBN 100 plans from the fastest NBN providers compare on price:
#1: Telstra's fastest NBN plans
Telstra customers achieved 102.3% of maximum plan speeds during peak times on the ACCC's June report, putting it in top spot. Here are Telstra's fastest plans.
Telstra it reports typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans, 100Mbps on NBN 100 plans, 250Mbps on NBN 250 plans, and 700Mbps on NBN 1000 plans.
Telstra NBN plans are contract-free and come with a powerful Telstra modem. You can change providers at any time, but you’ll need to return your modem or pay $200 if you leave within your first 24 months.
Choosing a Telstra NBN plan comes with benefits including 4G backup in the event of an outage, and the opportunity to earn points on your monthly bill through the Telstra Plus program.
#2: Exetel's fastest NBN plans
Exetel dropped to second place, but its customers achieved 102% of maximum plan speeds during peak hours on the ACCC's latest broadband performance report. Here are Exetel's plans from NBN 50 and up.
Exetel currently reports typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on its NBN 50 plans, 100Mbps on its NBN 100 speed plans, and 220Mbps on NBN 250 plans. Exetel doesn't currently sell NBN 1000 plans.
#3: Optus' fastest NBN plans
Optus customers achieved 101.7% of maximum plan speeds during peak times, according to ACCC's latest report. Here are Optus's fastest plans:
Optus reports typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans, 100Mbps on NBN 100 speed plans, 245Mbps on NBN 250 plans, and 780Mbps on NBN 1000 plans.
Optus NBN plans are competitive with 4G backup on selected plans powered by its mobile network. You also get access to Optus SubHub which lets you save up to 10% on subscriptions when you link them.
Optus' NBN plans are contract-free, but you'll have to pay out a pro-rated modem fee if you leave within your first 36 months. The modem fee is equivalent to $8.50 multiplied by the number of months remaining on your three-year term.
#4: Dodo and iPrimus' fastest NBN plans
Customers on sibling brands Dodo and iPrimus achieved 101.2% of maximum plan speeds during peak times on the ACCC's latest broadband performance report, claiming up to equal fourth. Here are Dodo's fastest NBN plans.
Dodo reports typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans, 100Mbps on NBN 100 plans, 245Mbps on NBN 250 plans. It doesn't offer NBN 1000 plans at this time.
And here are iPrimus' fastest NBN plans:
It reports typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans, 100Mbps on NBN 100 plans, 245Mbps on NBN 250 plans, and 650Mbps on NBN 1000 plans.
#5: TPG's fastest NBN plans
TPG managed to get back into the top five this quarter, with its customers achieving 100.9% of maximum plan speeds during busy in hours in the June ACCC report.
Here are TPG's fastest NBN plans:
TPG reports typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans, 97Mbps on NBN 100 plans, 232Mbps on NBN 250 plans, and 671Mbps on NBN 1000 plans.
The fastest internet plans in Australia
If you're looking for the fastest NBN plans you can get, you'll want an NBN 1000 or NBN 250 plan. As the names suggest, NBN 1000 plans can hit speeds of 1000Mbps, while NBN 250 can go as fast as 250Mbps.
We've seen many providers increase their typical evening speeds on NBN 1000 plans lately, leading to a bit of a shake-up. Swoop currently has the fastest NBN 1000 plan, reporting typical evening speeds of 969Mbps. Superloop is next up, reporting 811Mbps, followed by Optus at 780mbps. Telstra Sits in fourth, with a still respectable 700Mbps. After that you have TPG and iiNet reporting typical evening speeds of 671Mbps.
Here are the fastest NBN 1000 plans:
If you don't want to spend quite as much, an NBN 250 plan might be a better option that's still blisteringly fast. Telstra, Swoop, Southern Phone, and AGL all report typical evening speeds of 250Mbps on their NBN 250 plans, making them effectively congestion-free. Aussie Broadband, Optus, More, Tangerine, Dodo, and iPrimus are a little slower at 245Mbps during peak hours. That 5Mbps shouldn't make a significant difference, however.
Here are the fastest NBN 250 plans:
NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans are only available to those with FTTP or HFC NBN connection types.
If you can't get an NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plan, 5G home internet could be an alternative. Uncapped 5G home internet plans can reach download speeds of over 200Mbps during peak hours, making them roughly equivalent to an NBN 250 plan.
Here's a look at uncapped 5G home internet plans currently on the market:
How can I speed up my internet?
There are a few key ways to speed up your internet. The first is changing your plan. If you're on an NBN 50 plan and have added a bunch of new devices to your house, it might be time to upgrade to NBN 100.
If you're already on the maximum speed tier your connection allows, you could shop around for providers with better typical evening speeds. For example, some NBN 100 providers report typical evening speeds of around 90Mbps, while others report 100Mbps. The difference between typical evening speeds can become more significant when you look at NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans.
If you're already on a fast plan but you don't feel like it's delivering on speed, there could be issues with your hardware at home. If you're on a high-speed plan, you need a fast enough modem to match. You'll ideally want something with WiFi 6.
Fastest NBN FAQs
What is the fastest NBN plan?
An NBN 1000 plan is the fastest internet available in available. NBN 1000 plans are only available to FTTP or HFC and technology types, however. Most other fixed-line connections are limited to NBN 100 at best.
Here's a selection of NBN 1000 plans sorted by the fastest typical evening speeds:
Who is the fastest internet provider in Australia?
According to the ACCC, Exetel is the fastest internet provider in Australia when it comes to delivering on the speeds promised by its NBN plans. Swoop currently has the fastest NBN 1000 plan in the WhistleOut database, reporting typical evening speeds of 969Mbps.
What internet speeds do NBN 50 plans actually deliver?
As of April 2024, the average typical evening speed reported by the ACCC for fixed-line NBN 50 plans was approximately 50.65Mbps.
What internet speeds should you expect on NBN 100 plans?
As of December 2024, the average typical evening speed reported by the ACCC for fixed-line NBN 100 plans was approximately 97.7Mbps.
Why does the ACCC say some providers achieve over 100% of the maximum speed?
NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans are technically capable of achieving faster than the maximum speed tiers these plans allow. NBN Co overprovisions download speeds on these tiers by 10 to 15%. This is intended to counterbalance the bandwidth used in delivering a service. Without overprovisioning, NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans would rarely be able to hit 50Mbps or 100Mbps, respectively.
