An unlimited internet plan is truly unlimited in the sense that there are no limits on how much data you can use. There are, however, limits on the speed of your uploads and downloads. Check the advertised max or typical evening speed of your plan before signing up.

There are limits on NBN 250 plans but they aren't for unlimited data. Rather, it's about access.

A wireless internet plan operates via the same mobile networks that power our smartphone connections.

More Australians will be able to take up a 4G wireless plan due to the limited availability of 5G coverage which is restricted to more populated areas of the country. However, 5G wireless internet plans are faster.

5G home internet plans generally have unlimited data but they do different speed tiers. There are three: 50Mbps, 100Mbps and uncapped speeds. Uncapped speeds will go as fast as network conditions allow.

A few rare plans don't come with unlimited data but they do come with so much data they might as well be.

If you decide to choose a plan capped at 50Mbps, this means it's the equivalent of NBN 50, however, you may experience slightly slower speeds during peak hours. This is a great option if you're either conscious of the price or you know you won't use over 50Mbps.

5G network coverage is still in the process of expanding so it's not available to everyone just yet. Telstra has the largest 4G mobile network which covers 99.6% of people but its 5G network only extends to 85%.

How to find the best unlimited home internet plan

There are namely three things to consider when looking for a new unlimited home broadband plan: speed, price and perks.

Because unlimited data for internet plans is fairly ubiquitous in Australia, speed is the key differentiating factor between plans.

NBN plans are offered across six NBN speed tiers, ranging from a maximum speed of 12Mbps to 1000Mbps. Speeds from 250Mbps are limited to certain connection types.

Home wireless plans don't have official speed tiers but they tend to fall into ranges of 20/25Mbps for 4G and 50Mbps, 100Mbps or uncapped for 5G.

Here's a look at what internet speed you might need for different use cases.

Price is the next most important. Faster plans tend to cost more. Although prices for faster speed tier plans are coming down after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and NBN agreed on new wholesale pricing in 2023. This doesn't mean they're cheaper than slower plans at all but the price gap between them is narrower.

Finally, there are perks. If two providers are offering the same speed for similar prices, how do you decide between them? You could flip a coin, stay with one for six months and then switch to the other when the special offer pricing ends. Or, you can look to see if there are any special features. For example, Exetel offers five free speed boosts a month to the next possible speed tier. Some might include a free subscription to a streaming service, or optimisation for gamers like Aussie Broadband.

Are unlimited internet plans really unlimited?

An unlimited internet plan is truly unlimited in the sense that there are no limits on how much data you can use.

There are, however, limits on your download and upload speeds. You'll need to check the advertised max or typical evening speed of your plan before signing up for an idea of the kind of speeds you'll see.

Most internet plans will come with what's known as a fair use policy. If you break it you could find your plan is terminated. However, these exist only to penalise people using their internet plan in incredibly excessive ways. The kinds of things that could impact the overall performance of the telco's network. So long as you're not trying to run a digital enterprise with banks of servers from your garden shed - you'll be right.

Maximum speeds aren't the same as typical evening speeds

When comparing unlimited NBN plans you'll want to look at typical evening speeds. A typical evening speed is what you expect to get during the busiest period of the day which is between 7pm and 11pm. This is when it's likeliest the network will experience congestion from everyone hopping online all at the same time - depending on how much capacity your telco has bought.

The ACCC requires Australian internet providers to advertise typical evening speeds clearly which makes it easy to compare them across different NBN plans.

Do you need an unlimited data internet plan?

While many people spend a lot of time online not everyone uses the same amount of data. Depending on how much data you use you may not be after an unlimited plan. NBN Co released figures at the end of 2023 which found the average Australian NBN user downloaded 423GB per month. That's the equivalent of downloading episode one of The Simpsons from a streaming platform a whopping 2,708 times to give you some idea.

If you use very little data you may be interested in swapping to a mobile broadband plan. In a handful of cases, you could be getting a better deal this way. Some smaller internet service providers such as Clear Networks or Western Australia-based Future Broadband and Quokka Net do offer data-capped NBN plans but when we've compared the value of these plans they're either more expensive or similarly priced to the unlimited equivalent. This makes signing up for an actually unlimited plan a no-brainer.

Are there unlimited satellite internet plans?

Yes, while Starlink was once technically the only unlimited satellite NBN plan in the Australian market that all changed with the new Sky Muster Plus Premium plans. Like Starlink they have no data caps and with speeds of 100Mbps they may be the best satellite NBN plans for fast speeds.

Do all providers offer unlimited internet plans?

No, however most popular providers offer unlimited internet plans even satellite-only focused providers. The providers who don't offer at least a few unlimited internet plan options are far and few between.

Which internet plans don't have unlimited data?

If you don't want unlimited data and want to save because you use very little data then mobile broadband plans could be a suitable option for you depending on your network coverage. Keep in mind you'll need to check how the download speed compares to other internet plans as well.

A handful of NBN plans with data caps do exist but these tend not to be very good value compared to unlimited data plans from bigger providers.
