When Telstra MVNO Boost Mobile's NBN plans launch later this year, a key part of the pitch will be flexibility around speeds. Boost founder Peter Adderton told WhistleOut that customers won't be locked into a single speed tier, and will have the flexibility to step up or down based on their needs.
"In some instances, you need a lot of speed, and then in other instances, you need to turn that down," said Adderton. "That flexibility […] is one of the things we want to start to pioneer in this country."
Adderton wouldn’t confirm the exact mechanism to avoid "giving out the secret sauce", but pointed to what he's doing with MobileX in the United States where the platform uses artificial intelligence to gauge a user's data needs.
"You can change [your data allowance], or we can use artificial intelligence to help you change that."
Adderton gave the example of needing faster speeds when his kids are at home, but slower speeds when it's just him and his wife, and the NBN speed tier automatically changing based on those needs.
"If I don't need fast speeds, I shouldn't be paying for those speeds. I think that's something we really want to deploy in the Australian market."
Launtel is the only major NBN provider that currently offers similar flexibility around speed tiers. Instead of charging for a month ahead of time, Launtel does per-day billing and customers can upgrade or downgrade their plan as often as they like, or even pause it entirely.
Superloop and Exetel give customers give customers on certain NBN plans five free speed boosts per month, allowing them to jump up a speed tier for 24 hours at no extra cost.
The other part of Boost Broadband's offering will be bundle deals for customers who also have a Boost Mobile prepaid mobile plan. Adderton wouldn't elaborate on what this will look like, as he "doesn't want to give competitors an opportunity to get their act together".
Boost Broadband is set to launch in the third quarter of the year, "probably July or August".
