This year's iPhone launch was a bit different than usual. While we got an iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple has yet to launch a "standard" iPhone 18. As such, the iPhone 17 will still be the go to for anyone looking for a cheaper Apple-made handset.
In this guide, we're looking at plans, deals, pricing, and key features for the standard iPhone 17.
iPhone 17 plans
The iPhone 17 is available on mobile plans from Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone. All three providers offer the choice of 24-month and 36-month repayment terms. A 24-month term means you own your iPhone 17 faster, while a 36-month term brings down your monthly cost.

*iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max were discontinued in September 2026. While the iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, and iPhone Air got price increases when the iPhone 18 Pro launched, this wasn't the case for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. As such, we're still listing their launch pricing here. You should be able to find them cheaper, however.
iPhone 17 features

Every 2025 iPhone model has a few shared features. These include a variant of the new A19 chipset, an anti-reflective display coating, Ceramic Shield 2 protection with better scratch resistance, 256GB of starting storage, and a higher-resolution selfie camera.
iPhone 17 design
Every member of the iPhone 17 family looks a little different this time.
The iPhone 17 has the smallest visual refresh, but still has meaningful changes. It features a 120Hz refresh rate display for the first time, and a slightly larger 6.3-inch display like 2024's iPhone 16 Pro. Given even budget Android devices feature 120Hz refresh panels, Apple finally giving the iPhone 17 a smoother display is a welcome upgrade.
With the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple moved away from a titanium build and swapped back to aluminium. The pair feature an aluminium unibody, but with a glass cutout for wireless charging and MagSafe. There's also a much larger camera bump, which Apple calls the "plateau", almost similar to the Pixel 10 family's camera bar.
Lastly, the iPhone Air measures in at 5.6mm at its thinnest point, which makes it even slimmer than Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge. The phone has a 6.5-inch 120Hz display, but just a single rear-facing camera.

iPhone 17 camera
The standard iPhone 17 has a 48MP primary lens and a new 48MP ultra-wide lens.
On the Pro front, both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max now have three 48MP cameras: a 48MP primary lens, a 48MP ultra-wide lens, and a new 48MP telephoto lens with 8x optical zoom.
The iPhone Air has a single 48MP camera.
All four models have an 18MP selfie camera, up from 12MP in previous years. Dubbed the "Center Stage" camera, this is backed by an unusual square sensor. This enables landscape selfie photos while still holding the phone vertically, and face tracking when making video calls.

iPhone 17 battery
Every iPhone 17 model has a slightly bigger battery. The iPhone 17 can get up to 30 hours of video playback per charge, up from 22 on the iPhone 16. The 6.3-inch iPhone 17 Pro offers up to 31 hours of video playback per charge, up from 27 on the iPhone 16 Pro. The 6.9-inch iPhone 17 Pro Max promises up to 37 hours of video playback, up from 33 in the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The iPhone Air is able to get up to 28 hours of video playback per charge.
iPhone 17 processor
All 2025 iPhone models are powered by a new Apple-made A19 processor.
The standard iPhone 17 features a "standard" A19 chipset, the iPhone Air features an A19 Pro chipset with five GPU cores, while the Pro models feature an A19 Pro with six GPU cores.
iPhone 17 eSIM
US iPhone models haven't had a physical SIM since the iPhone 14, and relied on eSIM. The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max still have a physical SIM card on top of eSIM, but the iPhone Air no longer has a physical SIM slot.
eSIM (an electronic SIM or embedded SIM) is a rewritable SIM card that’s built directly into the phone. It never leaves your phone. Instead, you simply download a "software SIM" from your provider of choice.
iPhone 17 5G
The iPhone 17 family and iPhone Air all naturally have 5G connectivity. WhistleOut's coverage checker tool has 5G coverage maps, making it easy to see whether you can get 5G. All you need to do is pop in your address when searching for a new phone plan. After you've done so and hit Search, you can jump straight to the coverage map by tapping See Coverage Map and then tapping Click To Activate Interactive Map.
This map will show you what kind of coverage you have in your area. 5G coverage is highlighted using the darkest shade of purple, but unticking 4G can help make it clearer. The drop-down menu lets you choose between telcos.
Coverage maps are only approximate, only show outdoor coverage, and may be impacted by local conditions such as buildings.

iPhone 17 plan providers
Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are all ranging the iPhone 17 family. Here's a breakdown of the major benefits you can expect each provider to offer.
Telstra iPhone 17 plans
Telstra iPhone plans are often the priciest on the Australian market, but they do come with a host of perks.
Telstra lets you pay your iPhone off over 12, 24, or 36 months, and all plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your cap, your data will simply be slowed to speeds of 1.5Mbps, which is still fast enough to stream video in SD. But speeds may be slower during peak times.
Telstra still has Australia's largest mobile network, covering over 2.14 million square kilometres. In addition, Telstra has a partnership with Starlink operator SpaceX, allowing you to send text messages and use select apps via satellite when mobile coverage is unavailable. A clear view of the sky is needed for this.
Telstra is the only telco in Australia to still have a rewards program. As a customer, you earn points for every dollar spent with Telstra, which can then be redeemed for discounts on new tech.
Optus iPhone 17 plans
Optus iPhone plans come with solid data inclusions.
Higher-end Optus plans also come with unlimited international calls to selected destinations included with the plan.
All Optus plans are contract-free, and devices can be paid off across 12, 24, or 36 months.
In addition, all Optus postpaid plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your allowance, you'll be slowed to 1.5Mbps rather than being billed $10 per gigabyte.
Vodafone iPhone 17 plans
Vodafone iPhone plans may not come with the kinds of freebies and perks you can get from Optus or Telstra, but they have bonuses when it comes to bundling.
If you have a Vodafone mobile plan, you can get most of the telco's internet plans - NBN, 5G home internet, and 4G home internet - at a discounted rate.
Vodafone customers also save $5 per month if they bundle a second mobile plan on to their account, and then an extra $15 for each plan after.
Vodafone postpaid plans are all free from excess data charges. When you go over your plan allowance, you'll be capped at 2Mbps.
You'll also get access to Vodafone's famous $5 roaming, which is still easily the best way to travel with your Australian phone number.
Thanks to a network sharing agreement with Optus, Vodafone's network coverage is now practically identical to Optus' when it comes to 4G.
How to choose the best iPhone 17 plan for you
There are a few key factors to keep in mind when choosing your iPhone 17 plan:
- Answering "how much mobile data do I use" can help you avoid overspending. Don't pay for more data than you need
- Decide whether you want to pay off your phone shorter on a 24-month plan or get a smaller bill over a longer period of time on a 36-month plan
- If you're a frequent overseas traveller, consider any international roaming inclusions
- You may also want to make international phone calls so check if the destinations you may be calling are included in your plan
