Google has just released its latest mid-tier phone, the Pixel 7a. Available to buy from today onward, the Pixel 7a builds on Google's critically acclaimed A-series with a new processor, a big jump up in camera size, enhanced durability, and wireless charging.
There's no pre-order period for the Pixel 7a, but there are still some deals for those who get in early. If you buy directly through Google before May 22, you'll get $150 of Google Store credit and a limited edition case for your new phone.
Telstra has a similar offer. If you grab your Pixel 7a on a Telstra plan before May 24, you'll get a pair of Pixel Buds A-Series and a case.

How much does the Google Pixel 7a cost in Australia?
The Pixel 7a costs $749 in Australia. That's identical to what you'd pay for the Pixel 6a last year. Here's pricing for the whole Pixel 7 family:
- Pixel 7a: $749
- Pixel 7: $999
- Pixel 7 Pro: $1,299
Google Pixel 7a features

In addition to the obligatory annual upgrades like a new processor and better camera, the Pixel 7a benefits from wireless charging and what Google says is its most durable A-series design yet. Here's what to expect from the Pixel 7a:
Google Pixel 7a design
The Pixel 7a sticks with Google's latest Pixel aesthetic - camera bar and all. It takes most of its cues from the Pixel 7, but has slightly thicker bezels around the display.
Google says the Pixel 7a has been re-designed to be its most durable A-series device yet. It retains its predecessor's IP67 rating for water resistance, but Google says the internal frame has been reinforced for better drop protection.
One other significant addition this year is wireless charging. A-series Pixels have previously been limited to wired charging.
You can get the Pixel 7a in a choice of Charcoal, Sea, or Snow.
Google Pixel 7a camera
The Pixel 7a has two rear-facing cameras: a 64MP primary lens, and a 13MP ultra-wide lens. The 64MP primary lens is a big step up from the 12MP lens we saw on the Pixel 6a last year, and the highest resolution lens we've seen on a Pixel so far. More megapixels don't necessarily make for better photos, but it should help the Pixel 7a get even better low light performance. You also get a 13MP ultra-wide lens and a 13MP selfie camera.
Google Pixel 7a battery
The Pixel 7a has a 4,385mAh battery. That's just a touch smaller than the Pixel 6a, which we found to be a little disappointing in longevity. Of course, the more efficient Tensor G2 processor could help make the Pixel 7a last longer than its predecessor.
Google Pixel 7a processor
Just like the standard Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, the Pixel 7a is powered by Google's in-house Tensor G2 processor. This also means it will get three years of Android updates and five years of security updates. The Pixel 7a ships with Android 13, so it will be updated to at least Android 16.
Google Pixel 7a 5G
The Pixel 7a has 5G connectivity. To take advantage of it, you'll just need to make sure you have a 5G mobile plan and 5G coverage.
WhistleOut's coverage checker tool has 5G coverage maps, making it easy to see whether you can get 5G. All you need to do is pop in your address when searching for a new phone plan. After you've done so and hit Search, you can jump straight to the coverage map by tapping See Coverage Map and then tapping Click To Activate Interactive Map.
This map will show you what kind of coverage you have in your area. 5G coverage is highlighted using the darkest shade of purple, but unticking 4G and 3G can help make it clearer. The drop-down menu lets you choose between telcos.
Coverage maps are only approximate, only show outdoor coverage, and may be impacted by local conditions such as buildings.
Google Pixel 7a plan providers
Telstra and Optus are both ranging the Google Pixel 7a. Here are the main benefits you can expect from each.
Telstra Google Pixel 7a plans
Telstra Pixel plans are often the priciest on the Australian market, but they do come with a host of perks.
Telstra lets you pay your Pixel off over 12, 24, or 36 months, and all plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your cap, your data will simply be slowed to speeds of 1.5Mbps, which is still fast enough to stream video in SD. But speeds may be slower during peak times.
Optus Google Pixel 7a plans
Optus Pixel plans come with solid data inclusions.
Higher-end Optus plans also come with unlimited international calls to selected destinations included with the plan.
All Optus plans are contract-free, and devices can be paid off across 12, 24, or 36 months.
In addition, all Optus postpaid plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your allowance, you'll be slowed to 1.5Mbps rather than being billed $10 per gigabyte.
How to choose the best Google Pixel 7a plan for you
There are a few key factors to keep in mind when picking a Pixel plan:
- Answering "how much mobile data do I use" can help you avoid overspending. Don't pay for more data than you need
- Decide whether you want to pay off your phone shorter on a 24-month plan or get a smaller bill over a longer period of time on a 36-month plan
- If you go overseas frequently, consider any international roaming inclusions
- If you make international phone calls, check if the destinations you may be calling are included in your plan
