Sure, you could spend hundreds each year on a gym membership, hire a personal trainer, or invest in expensive fitness equipment in order to get in shape. But if you want an easy, cheap, and convenient way to get fit, look no further than your smartphone.

There's an overwhelming number of workout and exercise-focused apps available for iPhone and Android, covering a wide range of activities: cardio, circuit training, strength, yoga, running and more. So we're picked some of our fave fitness apps below: whether you're new to exercise, or just looking to shake up your workout, you'll find something for every fitness level.

And if you're concerned about your phone bill, we've also included handy information on the difference between free apps, paid apps, and in-app purchases.

MapMyWalk

Available on: Google Play, App Store

Walking is one the easiest, cheapest and accessible ways to stay in shape, or amp up your existing fitness goals. And whether you're a beginner or a seasoned power-walker, MapMyWalk is the perfect free tool to keep track of your progress.

The app allows users to track and discover walking routes, save and improve on distance and time, record additional statistics such as pace, elevation and calories/kilojoules burned, and connect with other MapMyWalk users. There's even options for tracking other activities, such as running, cycling, cross training or yoga, so all your favourite fitness options are covered.

Daily Yoga

Available on: Google Play, App Store

If you'e looking for a beginner-friendly, low-impact exercise for mind and body, Daily Yoga's convenient workout plans are the gentle way to get into the practice without paying exorbitant studio fees. The app features options for new to advanced practitioners, with workouts focused on toning, weight loss, flexibility, strength, and more.

The app is free to use, although paid subscriptions are available if you're interested in premium features. In addition to detailed instructions on over 500 poses (plus 200 built-in HD yoga classes), Daily Yoga also features guided meditation and relaxation, an online community, and plenty of tools for you to track your progress.

MyFitnessPal

Available on: Google Play, App Store

Whether you're trying to lose fat, gain muscle, or simply eat better to feel better, MyFitnessPal is the ultimate app for tracking diet and exercise. With an easy-to-use daily food diary that automatically calculates the calories and nutritional value of most foods - plus a barcode scanner - it's an easy (and free) way to make healthier choices every day.

MyFitnessPal also includes tools for logging exercise and steps, so you can compare your 'calories in' and 'calories out' at a glance. Everything about the app is personalised, making it easy for users to set goals and work on positive lifestyle changes. You can also connect and sync other fitness apps and devices, add your friends, and join supportive online health and fitness communities.

C5K - 5K Trainer

Available on: Google Play, App Store

Whether you're dreaming of competing a marathon, or just want to make it around the block without puffing, C25K is the ultimate learn-to-run app for beginners. The app gives users a simple but effective running program that promises to take you from the couch to a completed 5-kilometre jog in just eight weeks of consistent use.

The C25K regime includes a 30-minute run three times per week, so it's not time-consuming or complicated. The app itself can be integrated with MyFitnessPal and social media, and includes an audio coach, forum access and optional running playlist subscription packages. Otherwise, C25K is free to download and use - and once you've mastered a 5K run, you can move on up to the 10K partner app.

7 Minute Workout

Available on: Google Play, App Store

Needing a easy way to break into exercise, or just short on time and equipment? The 7 Minute Workout is exactly what it sounds like - seven minutes of hard work that's scientifically proven to aid in cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and weight loss.

This free app takes you through a simple but intense exercise regime that can be completed in a quick (but tough) seven-minute cycle. Using high intensity interval training, the 7 Minute Workout combines cardio and bodyweight exercises that are suitable even for beginners, all explained via voice and video instructions. With no hidden fees or in-app purchases, it's a great all-rounder fitness app for when you're too busy to hit the gym or sidewalk.

JEFIT Workout Tracker

Available on: Google Play, App Store

If you're a current (or aspiring) gym rat, JEFIT Workout Tracker is the easy, convenient way to keep track of your training (and pick up tips and tools to help maximise your workouts). JEFIT lets users log exercises, weights and reps; discover new exercises; and find customised training programs for fat loss, powerlifting, bodybuilding, and more.

Whether you're an pro at weight training, or new to the gym, JEFIT is a great way to monitor your progress and set new challenges and goals. All exercises and routines feature full instructions, and with more than 1300 exercise options available, there's something for every fitness level. JEFIT is free to download and use, with monthly subscription options available for serious lifters.

Nike Training Club

Available on: Google Play, App Store

Sportswear brand Nike offers several fitness-related smartphone apps, but our favourite is the comprehensive (and 100% free!) Training Club. Touted as the 'ultimate personal trainer', this app includes more than 175 specially designed workouts that cover specifics such as strength, cardio, and flexibility.

Nike Training Club also recommends daily personalised workouts to users, and will adjust training plans to reflect on your progress and preferences. There's exercise options for all fitness and experience levels, with workout times from fifteen to forty-five minutes, and plenty of bodyweight training options mean no equipment is necessary. You can also try out routines from athletes such as Serena Williams and Cristiano Ronaldo, plus track all of your activity outside the app.

30 Day Fitness Challenge

Available on: Google Play, App Store

If you're looking for more variety in your exercise, but the same level of motivation and daily support as C25K, the 30 Day Fitness Challenge may be worth your time. Designed for users who'd prefer to work out at home, the app is great for beginners looking to develop (and stick to) an exercise routine.

With detailed instructions and videos, and options from beginner to advanced, The 30 Day app increases its intensity to match your fitness levels - meaning you're constantly challenged over the initial 30-day program. You'll get daily reminders to work out, a record of your training progress, and the option to try out full body, abdominal, or butt challenges. The 30 Day Workout Challenge is free to use, and the perfect way to ease into exercise at home.

Paid apps and in-app purchases

While all the apps we've listed in this article are free, you will find some applications require you to pay an upfront charge to download and use them. If you do tap on a paid app, you'll receive a pop-up asking you to sign in or verify your account before making the purchase, so you're unlikely to buy an app by accident.

Some apps are free to download, but feature in-app purchases - the ability to buy added features or extras from within the app. This mostly applies to games, but again, if you are using an app with this feature, you'll be prompted to confirm your purchase via your Apple ID or Google account before buying.
