New phones typically come with a handy SIM eject tool. Its job is to pop out the SIM card tray on your old phone, so you can place your physical SIM in a new device. But what if you didn't need a physical SIM? Cue the entry of eSIM, a digital SIM that needs neither SIM eject tool nor SIM card. All you need is WiFi and a prepaid or postpaid SIM-only plan from a participating mobile provider.

The trick, though, becomes how to swap to eSIM from a physical SIM card. And when the eSIM setup is complete, the next complication is how to move that eSIM to a new phone if you upgrade. Before we get into the specifics, here's a list of the popular eSIM plans from our database.

How to activate eSIM on an iPhone

If you use an iPhone or iPad, you may be able to use an Apple tool to swap from a physical SIM card to an eSIM with compatible devices. Follow these steps to convert a physical SIM card to an eSIM:

With an iPhone, ensure you have the latest version of iOS, then follow the iPhone eSIM steps above. For Android users, follow these steps using the My Vodafone app:
