Apple today announced the Powerbeats Pro 2, a refresh of the "sportiest" earbuds in the Beats portfolio. The previous generation Powerbeats Pro launched in 2019, marking six years between iterations. As such, the new buds feature quite a few changes.
A redesign is the most noticeable, with the Powerbeats Pro 2 buds both 20% lighter and smaller than the 2019 model. The ear hook itself is 50% smaller, and has been rebuilt with nickel-titanium alloy wiring for improved durability and flexibility.
Similarly, the charging case has been shrunk by 33%. It's still quite large when compared to what you'd get with other wireless earbuds, but the hooks do necessitate that.
The Powerbeats Pro 2 feature noise cancellation for the first time, and also have a transparency mode. They're powered using the same H2 chip found inside the AirPods Pro 2, and in our testing, we found almost identical testing for noise-cancelling and sound quality.
The H2 chip also means the Powerbeats Pro 2 will quick pair with iOS devices, and automatically sync to any device signed in with the same Apple ID. It also enables personalised spatial audio when listening to the Powerbeats Pro 2 with an Apple product.
While most recent Beats products have had support for native Android features like Google Fast Pair, this is absent with the Powerbeats Pro 2. They will still work with Android devices, and work with the Beats Android app.
In terms of battery, the Powerbeats Pro are said to last up to eight hours per charge with noise cancelling on, and 10 hours with it off. This increases to a total of 36 hours and 45 hours of playtime with the included charging case. A five-minute top-up should give the earbuds up to 1.5 hours of charge.
One entirely new feature is an integrated heart rate monitor. This can measure a user's heart rate when tracking workouts with certain apps on iPhone, including Nike Run Club, Runna, Ladder, Slopes, Peloton, and YaoYao. The heart rate monitor will also work with most Android apps that have heart rate monitoring capabilities, but tracking needs to be manually enabled through the Beats app or via a button press on the earbuds ahead of each workout.
The Powerbeats Pro 2 are available to order from today for $399 from Apple and JB Hi-Fi ahead of a February 13 release date. They come in four colours: black, sand, purple, and orange.
