Dodo has quietly scrapped excess data charges from its mobile plans.
New customers will instead be able to continue using their service when go over their allowance, but at greatly reduced speeds. This is what's considered to be an unlimited data mobile plan, and it's similar to what Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all offer.
Check out Dodo's new unlimited data plans below:
What's changed?
With these changes, Dodo has introduced a speed cap. If you use up your monthly data allowance
your
speeds are
capped at 1Mbps until your next billing period.
Previously, Dodo mobile customers would be charged
$5
per additional gigabyte of data they used after reaching their
monthly allowance.
For heavy data users, this could quickly add up and required them to pay close
attention to how they were tracking throughout the month.
Now admittedly, 1Mbps isn't very fast at all.
However, you can still quite a bit done with
1-1.5Mbps of mobile data. It's certainly enough to get you through a day or two until your next
billing
cycle and your wallet will thank you.
You can always add extra data at 5GB for $10 if you really need
to. Any data pack you add can be used at full speed.
Note: Dodo is planning to migrate existing customers over to the new plans in the coming months. Until then excess data charges will still apply. You can contact Dodo directly to see if your account can be moved over earlier.
Save your data for next month
At the same time as it's scrapped excess data charges, Dodo has also introduced data banking for its 20GB plan and above.
This lets new Dodo
customers hold on to any data they haven't used when their billing cycle restarts. Customers can bank up to
500GB. So long as there's spare data banked you shouldn't need to worry about hitting the
cap.
Just be careful if you're thinking about switching between Dodo
plans as you'll lose any banked data you've saved.
How do Dodo's plans compare to other unlimited mobile plans?
As mentioned there's just a handful of providers that offer "unlimited data" in this way. The larger telcos have fractionally faster capped speeds. Telstra and Optus offer 1.5Mbps and Vodafone's speed is slightly
higher again at 2Mbps. Belong, like Dodo, also caps speeds at 1Mbps.
There's just one provider that offers better speeds, felix. felix has a plan with no data allowance. Instead, the speed is capped at 20Mbps which allows you to perform everyday
mobile activities and not worry about running out of data.
You can see felix's plan here:
One thing to keep in mind is that you could be getting much faster speeds (especially on a 5G plan) with the other telcos at any point before your plan is capped.
One thing's for sure Dodo's unlimited data plans certainly come first on price, just edging out Belong.
