As is the custom whenever Apple announces a new iPhone, some old models get cheaper, while others make their way to the Big iCloud in the sky. This time around, Apple has made permanent price cuts to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
The iPhone 16 now starts at $1,249, making it $150 cheaper than it used to be, while the iPhone 16 Plus is $200 cheaper at $1,399. Notably, Apple has trimmed down the number of storage options available for the devices. The iPhone 16 is now only available in a 128GB variant, while the iPhone 16 Plus maxes out at 256GB.
Here's full pricing for the discounted models:
- iPhone 16 128GB: $1,249
- iPhone 16 Plus 128GB: $1,399
- iPhone 16 Plus 256GB: $1,599
Apple is already charging the new prices for its old iPhones, and we'd expect to see this rolled out to other retailers and telcos offering the phones on a plan in the coming days. Pricing hasn't changed for the iPhone 16, which still starts at $999.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus have all been discontinued. While these phones haven't received official price cuts, we'd expect to see stock discounted as retailers sell out the remaining models. And of course, you'll still be able to find them as refurbished iPhones for years to come.
Interestingly, Apple discontinued more phones this time around than in previous years. Historically, Apple has kept around two previous generations with each new iteration. For example, when the iPhone 16 was announced, Apple kept both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 around.
At the same time, $999 price point of the iPhone 16e fulfils the need for a cheaper iPhone, and cutting the iPhone 15 price to somewhere between $1,249 and $999 would make for a confused lineup.
