Apple will hold its next major product event at 3am on September 10 (AEST), and the iPhone 18 family is almost certainly on the cards. In addition, we're expecting new Apple Watches and maybe a new pair of AirPods.
This year's iPhone family is rumoured to be a little different, however. Apple is expected to reveal just the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this year, with the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 punted to early next year, alongside the iPhone 18e. Instead, a foldable iPhone - dubbed the iPhone Ultra - could be announced alongside the latest Pro phones.
The iPhone Ultra is expected to have similar dimensions to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8, with a shortish 5.5-inch cover display and wide 7.6-inch internal display. When unfolded, this would give the iPhone Ultra roughly the same size and aspect ratio as an iPad mini.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are tipped to be a smaller upgrade by comparison, but the big unknown remains pricing. The generative AI-driven component crisis has increased the price of memory and storage, and some analysts expect the Pro models to increase in price by as much as $400.
This would mean you could pay $2,399 for an iPhone 18 Pro with 256GB of storage, or $2,599 for an iPhone 18 Pro Max with 256GB of storage.
Precedent suggests Apple will start taking pre-orders for the new iPhones from late at night on September 11 ahead of a September 18 release date, but there has been speculation the foldable iPhone Ultra may launch a little later this year.
In previous years we'd expect Apple to cut the price of older models alongside the announcement of new iPhones, but given the increased cost of memory and storage and the new cadence for the standard model, it is hard to predict what will happen this time around.
