In the relatively niche anime streaming space, Crunchyroll has gone from strength to strength over the last 20 years. It might not be the scrappy fan-powered website that it once was, but it’s increasingly become the most convenient way to stream some of the biggest anime straight out of Japan if your'e living in Australia.

What is Crunchyroll?

Crunchyroll is a dedicated anime streaming service that offers a wide range of dubs and subtitles on some of the biggest anime shows available, such as Demon Slayer, One Punch Man, One Piece, Chainsaw Man, and My Hero Academia.

Originally launched in 2006, Crunchyroll has 120 million registered users. Of that expansive global user base, 17 million pay for a subscription as of 2025. What started as a piracy site (no, really) for East Asian content has today shifted to a legal subscription service that hosts thousands of anime titles. A few acquisitions later, Crunchyroll is now owned by Sony and offers two paid plan tiers. It’s also available as an add-on through aggregate services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

No. Crunchyroll used to offer a free ad-supported tier, but that was removed sometime in 2022. You can still try Crunchyroll for free, however. Crunchyroll offers a seven-day free trial for new customers.

How much does Crunchyroll cost in Australia?

Crunchyroll offers monthly and yearly subscriptions. The Crunchyroll Fan tier costs $11.99 per month (or $119.99 per year) and offers HD streaming on a single device. Crunchyroll Mega Fan costs $14.99 per month (or $149.99 per year) and offers HD streaming on four devices, offline viewing, and access to the Crunchyroll Game Vault, an Xbox Game Pass-style library of downloadable PC games.

What about Crunchyroll Ultimate?

There are only two premium Crunchyroll subscriptions in Australia. But in places like the US, there's a pricier one called Crunchyroll Ultimate. It offers simultaneous anima updates, streaming on up to four devices, plus an annual swag bag.

What can I watch on Crunchyroll?

Here in Australia, the Crunchyroll streaming library offers over 1,300 TV shows and around 100 movies. Crunchyroll has competitors like HIDIVE with much smaller libraries, but there’s no doubt it is the place for most Australian anime fans. In fact, most of the shows in our guide to the best new anime available come from Crunchyroll’s library.

Even the most casual TV fans will recognise a few of the titles from the service’s most popular series:

  • Assassination Classroom
  • One Punch Man
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
  • One Piece
  • My Hero Academia
  • Attack on Titan
  • Dan Da Dan
  • Spy X Family
  • Chainsaw Man
  • Daemons of the Shadow Realm
  • Dragon Ball Z
  • Demon Slayer: Mugen Train
  • Kaiju No.8
  • Gachiakuta
  • Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Naruto
  • Solo Leveling
  • Naruto
  • Takopi's Original Sin
  • Lord of Mysteries
  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

What is the Crunchyroll Store?

At the time of writing, the Crunchyroll Store in Australia was temporarily unavailable as of 30 September 2025. Crunchyroll pledged that it was working "to bring fans a next-level shopping experience", with a relaunch scheduled for 2026. If you're reading this and the Australian Crunchyroll Store is still closed, you can buy anime merch from the US Crunchyroll Store.

What features does Crunchyroll have?

Crunchyroll is pretty lean on features, but the streaming service also doesn't lend itself to needing a feature-rich service. One of the best quality-of-life features is a simple 'Sub' or 'Dub' streaming option. Select 'Sub' if you want to stream in the original language with subtitles or choose 'Dub' if you want an English dub.

Outside of that, the Crunchyroll service will be familiar to anyone who's used a competing streaming service in the last few years. Promoted content is in a carousel at the top of the page, with top personalised picks just below it. Scroll down for content categories based on popular regional content, new episodes, and simulcasts. Keep scrolling for Netflix-like sub-categories of related content.

If you have a Crunchyroll Mega Fan subscription, you can download Crunchyroll content in HD quality for offline viewing. There's also the Crunchyroll Game Vault, which has some free-to-play games for every Crunchyroll user. Crunchyroll Mega Fan subscribers also get access to 50+ exclusive premium games inspired by the anime on the streaming service.
