To prove it wasn't a fluke, he did it again with Avatar 2: The Way of Water, which went on to make $2.3 billion at the global box office. Now he's poised to do it again with Avatar 3: Fire and Ash in December 2025. But if you want to refamiliarise yourself with the first two Avatar movies or want to know where to watch every Avatar movie that's been released and will be released, we've got you covered.
Grab a Disney Plus subscription to watch James Cameron's Avatar movies. The first Avatar movie was funded by 20th Century Fox, and that's partially true of Avatar 2: The Way of Water. Now that Disney owns Fox, Disney Plus is the home of all things Avatar.
How to watch the Avatar movies in Australia
If you want to stream the Avatar movies, you want a Disney Plus subscription. Like the Alien franchise and Predator movies, all IP that was once owned by 20th Century Fox now lives at the House of Mouse. The only disclaimer there is, like the Alien movies, you can only stream the theatrical version of Avatar, and not the (arguably superior, albeit butt-achingly longer) extended cut.
James Cameron's Avatar may be the most profitable Avatar, but it wasn't the first. If you want the other Avatar movie, aka The Last Airbender, grab a Netflix subscription from $9.99 a month. You can also stream Avatar: The Last Airbender (the live-action show) with a Netflix subscription. Avatar: The Last Airbender (the original cartoon) is available for streaming with a Paramount Plus subscription from $7.99 a month.
How much does Disney Plus cost?
To stream James Cameron's Avatar movies, you'll need a Disney Plus subscription. The best option to visit Pandora is at 4K resolution, but that'll cost extra via Disney Plus Premium for $20.99 a month or $209.99 per year upfront. Alternatively, the cheaper way to stream Avatar is with a Disney Plus Standard subscription for $15.99 per month or $159.99 per year.
Avatar: The Game is the 2009 game tie-in for the first Avatar movie, but it hasn't aged particularly well. If you want to play on a better-looking Pandora, you should check out Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. This 2023 game is more of its own thing than a movie tie-in. That said, the From the Ashes DLC ties in more closely with the Avatar: Fire and Ash movie.
What is the Avatar series about?
The Avatar movies are sci-fi stories set on Pandora: a beautiful planet with deadly fauna and even deadlier inhabitants. It doesn't help that the humans of this fictional future have decided to plunder Pandora's rich resources. Understandably, Pandora's Na'vi humanoid inhabitants are fighting back.
Avatar (2009)
The first Avatar movie follows the plight of Jake Sully, who's recruited into the titular avatar program after the untimely death of his twin brother. As an identical twin, Sully is compatible with the Na'vi body created for his late brother. His job is to infiltrate the Na'vi and gain their trust to encourage them to move away from a rich vein of minerals that the Resources Development Administration (RDA) wants to mine. Things get complicated when he falls in love with Neytiri, a Na'vi warrior from the Omatikaya Clan. The cast of Avatar 1 includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodrigeuz, and Giovanni Ribisi.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Avatar 2 is set sixteen years after the original Avatar. The RDA returns to Pandora, this time targeting the ocean creatures protected by the Metkayina Clan. Sully and Neytiri have Na'vi children now, alongside an adopted human son, Spider. They must win the trust of the Metkayina Clan for refuge and to rally support for a growing fight against the deadly and vengeful RDA forces. The cast of Avatar 2 includes most of those listed above from Avatar 1, alongside Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, and Edie Falco.
Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)
One year after the events of Avatar 2, Jake's family is still living with the Metkayina Clan and struggling with the death of a family member in Avatar: Fire and Ash. An old foe aligns with the flame-obsessed Ash People: a Na'vi tribe who see Pandora quite differently to the Omatikaya and Metkayina Clans. James Cameron teases an emotional ride with unexpected surprises and, of course, some big action. The Avatar 3 cast includes a lot of the names from the first two movies, alongside Oona Chaplin.
Avatar 4 and Avatar 5
Not a lot is known about Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 outside of their existence and the fact that the scripts are written and the initial design work has been done for the Avatar sequels. James Cameron says that part of Avatar 4 has been shot. Cameron teases that the relationship between Jake Sully and antagonist Quaritch will get more complicated as the series progresses. He's also said that Avatar 3 has to be profitable for the last two intended Avatar movies to be released. If all goes to plan, Avatar 4 is tentatively slated for release in December 2029 and Avatar 5 in December 2031.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theatres 18 December 2025 in Australia. If it follows the usual pattern, it'll be in cinemas for around 90 days. After that, Avatar: Fire and Ash will hit video-on-demand (VOD) purchase and rentals. After another month or so of VOD, you can expect to find Avatar: Fire and Ash on Disney Plus.
What order should I watch the Avatar movies in?
Even though there are still at least two more Avatar movies to come, James Cameron has been kind with the watch order. Each Avatar sequel is a full-fledged sequel – and the remaining films are set to follow suit – meaning that if you watch the Avatar movies in release order, you're also watching them in timeline order.
