Around half a million households have moved off NBN 50 plans since December last year according to the ACCC's latest NBN Wholesale Market Indicators Report.
The report states that there were 4.45 million active NBN 50 connections in the quarter ending December last year, which dropped to 3.98 million for the quarter ending September this year.
The majority of these users have moved to NBN 100 plans or faster. There are now approximately 1.8 million Australians on NBN 100 plans, up from 1.45 million in the quarter ending December 2023.
Slower NBN 25 plans have also increased in popularity, with the report showing the user base growing from 1.58 million to 1.75 million.
Lastly, the report groups NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans as one category. These NBN plans have also increased in popularity by around 185,000 users, but are only available to those with HFC or FTTP connections.
The decrease in NBN 50 plan popularity follows twin price rises at the end of 2023 and the middle of this year where NBN 50 was hit the hardest. For some providers, this has meant there's now just a $3 to $5 per month difference between an NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans.
In February this year, Aussie Broadband said it was seeing 69% of new customers were buying an NBN 100 plan or faster.
