NBN Co has relaxed rules for Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) customers hoping to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). Eligible customers in the FTTC footprint can now order an NBN 100 plan to trigger the free upgrade. Previously, customers needed to order a more expensive NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plan to start the process.
While FTTC customers are by and large able to get the download speeds offered by NBN 100 plans, upgrading to FTTP has other benefits. The ACCC found that FTTP connections are the least likely to experience an outage, have the fastest latency, and the lowest amount of packet loss.
Upgrading to FTTP via an NBN 100 plan will also allow those customers to order a faster plan in the future if they wish. This is notable, as NBN Co is hoping to launch 500Mbps, 750Mbps, and 2Gbps NBN plans in the future. These will only be available to FTTP and HFC customers.
After an eligible FTTC customer orders an NBN 100 plan (or faster), NBN technicians will visit twice: once for a pre-install visit, and a second time to actually install the necessary hardware. NBN Co estimates that it takes between 24 and 29 business days for the upgrade to be finished after the initial order is placed.
NBN Co says that over 3.5 million premises will be able to upgrade from either FTTN or FTTC by the end of 2025. Just over one million of these premises will be FTTC. Customers can see if they're already eligible by using the address check tool on the NBN Co website.
